China is a destination that should not be missed with its rich history and cultural heritage, ancient wonders, and one-of-a-kind cuisine. It’s a land brimming with fun activities, educational experiences and relaxing adventures. Planning a trip to China with kids may seem daunting at first, evoking all sorts of emotions, stress and anxiety. However, with some creative, practical planning, it can be a breeze if you go about it the right way.

Visit kid-friendly attractions

China is a large country, and thus it would be more sensible to handpick certain areas or cities ideal for kids. Consider Beijing, home to the famed Great Wall of China, which offers toboggan rides. Visit Disneyland Park in Shanghai, hop on a bullet train, or cruise on the Huangpu River.

Spend a day in Xi’an, home of the monumental terracotta warriors. Let your kids try their hand at making a mini terracotta warrior or learn the ancient art of paper cutting. Pet or pose with a panda in Chengdu, or take in the sights in Guilin along the Li River. Discover the art of kite making at the Nantong Kite Museum featuring an eclectic mix of kites, some fitted with sound effects. Consider including some exciting Chinese handcraft activities for your kids, such as painting an opera face mask or learning the art of Chinese calligraphy.

Timing is key

When planning a trip to China, particularly with kids, you want to find a good time to visit. April to May and September to October are considered the best months for travel to China as it is less crowded and the weather is perfect. Of course, this also depends on your children's school schedule, and you would need to work around that. Travelling to China during its winter season is less expensive, but certain areas of China, such as Beijing and Xi’an, would be cold.

Choose comfortable accommodation

There are several aspects to consider when choosing suitable accommodation. These include the location of the hotel or residence, proximity to transportation, amenities offered and comfortability. Ideally, you would want to consider finding serviced apartments offering swimming pools as it would keep your kids occupied. There are various options to choose from in almost all the cities you choose to visit, including Beijing, Shanghai and Nantong. Serviced apartments, the likes of Ascott Harmony City Nantong, offer convenience, comfortable lodgings and a fully equipped kitchen, ensuring your stay is both relaxing and hassle-free.

Consult a travel agency

While planning a trip on your own is exciting, it is less so when it involves kids. Consider talking to a travel consultant or an agency for assistance in planning your trip. Travel consultants and agents may provide customised tours to incorporate the parents and children's needs and desires. You want to avoid a tight, fast-paced schedule when travelling with kids as they can become exhausted and bored quickly. Instead, opt for an evenly-paced, relaxing schedule one that will ensure your kids have lots of fun.

Familiarise yourself with the little details

It is good to be up-to-date with China’s visa requirements, travel policies and any travel restrictions. This is vital even if your trip is being arranged by a travel agent. You want to avoid being unprepared and blind-sided should any issues arise when you arrive in China. Remember you are travelling with kids, and they would rely on you to make them feel safe.

Likewise, educate yourself on helpful travel tips in China. For example, it is recommended that you consume bottled water in China and avoid tap water. Similarly, avoid sampling food from street vendors if you or your kids have sensitive stomachs. Always inform guides or restaurants of any food allergies you or your children may have. Familiarise yourself with transport fares, entry fees and any discounts offered for those travelling with families.

Introduce your kids to China

Before setting off on your trip to China, consider introducing your kids to Chinese food and the language. When introducing them to Chinese food, be sure to note their preferences and any allergies they may develop. This would make organising food for them in China easier. As a fun group activity, why not learn some basic Mandarin phrases and words with your kids before your trip? This will help pique your kids’ curiosity further.
