Chapter One

….

I’m hanging out with my college friend, Jessica, and her little cousin. Her little cousin goes inside the house (we are on some sort of farm-like property) as another little kid, about six years old, drives a riding lawn mower with a trailer and a yapping dog running alongside. The whole sight is bizarre to behold and I’m worried on so many levels; for the kid driver, the dog, and the tractor/mower, for that matter. The kid is so small. Jessica remarks that it’s great they have access like this out here; as if kids elsewhere are deprived because they can’t drive tractors right out of the womb. I’m from the city and I’m horrified.

We follow the kid driver, who is surprisingly adept with the motorized vehicle and is plowing down weeds on the left side of the gravel/dirt road. We follow them back to the house and the kid parks the mower near an old fashioned drinking fountain. They hop off the seat like a pro, pull off their goggles and helmet, and I can now see that this kid looks pretty much identical to the other little cousin but more "boyish". I am trans myself and when the little kid talks and Jessica refers to them as Max, I quickly deduce that these are the young twins, one more "femme" and one "transboyish". The kid talks heatedly in a country tone with excitement about their mowing skills. The dog laps at a bowl at the base of the drinking fountain. I take in a nice, cool breath of fresh country air and admire the fields that extend far beyond the reach of my gaze.

The front door swings open and the attached screen door slams. One of the mothers, Jessica’s aunt, Raleigh, comes out in haste.

“Where have you been!?” She snaps at Max, but keeps eyeing Jessica.

“Mowin, Ma” the kid says all cool and nonchalant like a true cowboy.

“Well, it’s your sister’s birthday party tonight and she’d like you to be inside!” Turning to Jessica, “How could you allow this? Jazz is beyond upset!” Jessica responds, lazily, “It’s what he wanted to do…” Raleigh retorts, “Oh! So, now you just let him just do whatever he wants, even when there are other important things going on?” Jessica is silent. Raleigh huffs, glances at me, not with any particular emotion but remembering I’m there seems to make her soften. She sighs heavily, “Well, if y’all would just come inside, that’d be great” and she turns and hustles back in.

She’s a kind woman and very lesbian. She, and her partner, Chris, have been together forever and these kids are very much their own; eggs from both of them somehow shaken together and stirred with a nice local gay guy's sperm. When the whole concoction finally took, Raleigh carried them and out came the twins. It was a miraculous and wondrous occurrence. I’ve been around in Jessica’s life to hear about and even witness much of the kids' story, but this is the first time I am actually seeing them since they were infants. I’ve lived in New York City since college and it was very refreshing to be out here in the vast plains of the country, out in Nebraska.

We make our way inside, Max in the lead, helmet under his arm, boots clonking on the sidewalk that leads from the fountain to the porch, then clonking on the porch beams. He has a very strong gait for a six-year-old and I am very proud; fellow little transguy and all.
