Drawing and Paint Activities for Kids

Creative ideas to inspire your child's artistic side

By Babyz CornerPublished about a year ago 3 min read

There are so many fun ways to let kids be creative! I’m going to share some of my favorite activities that will give your little ones a creative outlet, even if you don’t have any art supplies at home.

Homemade Paint

This is a great way to get your kids involved in making their own art and learning how to use paint. All you need are a few simple ingredients, which you can find at most grocery stores or hardware stores.

  • 2 tablespoons powdered laundry detergent (the kind without bleach)
  • 1 cup water
  • Food coloring or tempera paint: red, yellow, blue and green

Cardboard Roll Stampers

Materials:

  • Cardboard roll stamper (or you could use a pencil, eraser end)
  • Paint or markers
  • Sponge to paint with (optional)

Instructions:

  • Cut the tube in half lengthwise; this will make it easier for your child to grasp and hold. You can also leave it whole if your child is older, as long as he or she has strong enough hands and fingers to hold onto it.
  • Dip the tube into some paint and use it like a stamp pad! You can create patterns by pressing down repeatedly on different surfaces: paper towels for an abstract design, paper for more defined shapes…the possibilities are endless!

Marbled Paper

To create a marbled design on paper, first mix water and food coloring in a shallow pan. Then dip your paper into this mixture to achieve the desired effect!

To use your marbled paper, consider framing it or hanging it on the wall as decor! You could also cut out shapes from the marbled paper that would look great.

Shaving Cream and Washable Paint

Shaving cream is a fun medium for kids to paint with. They can use sponges or paint brushes to create colorful designs on paper, wood, and plastic. Washable paint is another option for messy kids—just make sure you pick out the right kind of washable paint for your child’s age group.

Outdoor Artwork

You’ll want to supervise your kids while they’re drawing and painting outdoors. Make sure that you choose materials that are safe for outdoor use, like tempera paint or watercolors. If you’re concerned about the weather, then it’s probably best to take a break from outdoor artwork and do something else inside. It’s also important to make sure that your children wear sunscreen and bug spray when they’re outside!

Black Paper and Glue

Materials: Black paper, glue and a variety of art supplies

Activity: Using black paper and glue, this activity can be done by children or adults. You can use crayons, markers or paint for your designs and let the kids create their own unique works of art. Another way to do this is let them experiment with different types of glue; you could also try using colored paper instead of black!

Mess-free Painting

  • Use a paper plate.
  • Use a plastic cup.
  • Use a plastic container.
  • Use a plastic bag.

Use paper towels. If your child is old enough to use scissors (or you can cut them for them), he or she may enjoy making their own designs on paper towels and then gluing them onto cardboard boxes or other surfaces to create their own artistic masterpieces!

If you’re looking for something mess-free that’s inexpensive, try using old newspapers or magazines as canvases for your child’s artwork!

Top Paint and Drawing Products

There are a lot of ways to let kids safely explore their creativity.

It’s important to have a variety of materials on hand.

You should also be sure that your kids are encouraged to use their imaginations and make something beautiful.

To keep things tidy, it’s best to try and keep everything as mess-free as possible.

And finally, have fun!

Conclusion

We hope you have fun trying out these activities with your child! Remember that it’s important to let kids explore and make mistakes, so don’t get too stressed if they don’t turn out exactly how you planned. The best thing about these projects is that they can last for years, so enjoy making memories together by creating a piece of art together every week or even every day!
