Opening a new clinic dedicated to treating gambling addicts near a bustling casino in Milton Keynes is a poignant step taken by the government. This NHS facility, situated just three miles away from the vibrant heart of the city at Westcroft, aims to provide vital support and rehabilitation to individuals grappling with severe gambling addictions.

Set to open its doors this summer, this clinic in Milton Keynes is one of seven specialized gambling addiction centers being established across the UK as part of the NHS's effort to expand support services for individuals facing gambling-related harm.

Amanda Pritchard, CEO of NHS England, reflects on the drastic changes in the gambling landscape since the establishment of the NHS in 1948. While placing bets used to require a visit to a bookmaker, today, it takes just a simple tap on a smartphone. The relentless bombardment of gambling advertisements targets everyone, irrespective of age. As a consequence, the number of people seeking NHS assistance for gambling addiction has reached record highs, with referrals increasing by more than a third compared to the previous year.

According to the Gambling Commission, around 138,000 individuals are deemed problem gamblers, with an additional 1.3 million engaging in either moderate or low-risk gambling. Approximately 1,400 patients sought help last year alone. One patient, who received assistance from the Northern Gambling Harm Service, bravely shares their story of how gambling addiction consumed their life, leading to feelings of despair and strained relationships. However, through engagement with NHS services, they have managed to reclaim their lives and rebuild trust with their loved ones, fostering healthy and joyful connections once again.
