The death of prompt engineering by Ciaran Doyle

Here’s How to Give Your AI Content a bit of life... By Ciaran Doyle

Ever hit 'go' on an AI tool, read the output, and felt… nothing?

Like you've just received a perfectly grammatical, yet utterly lifeless piece of text?

You're not alone.

For countless solo creators and marketers, the promise of AI-powered content creation quickly dissolves into a super annoying reality…

Hours spent writing and testing prompts, only to end up with generic, soulless material that fails to connect, convert, or build any real brand affinity.

It just eats your time and gives you a depressingly poor return on investment.

The good news?

It's not entirely your AI's fault.

And it's not entirely yours either.

The problem, more often than not, lies in your process.

You're missing a simple systematic approach to guide the AI from a mere outputter of information into a powerful creative electronic employee.

The following piece of content isn't about finding the "perfect" prompt…

Honestly, they change quicker than the weather…

It's about a clear, repeatable system… A 3 stage AI Content Ignition Cycle.

The 3 stages are designed to transform your AI content generation from a bloody pain in the ass into something you are happy with…

Quality, engaging, effective material.

It's about shifting from just 'prompting' to 'co-creating' with intention and strategic simple leverage.

Why Most AI Content Feels Soulless (Apart from your Ai not having one that is…)

This is a pretty easy fix, so let's quickly touch on why so much AI-generated content lands with a thud.

Understanding the "why" this happens makes the "how" a lot more effective.

let's get a bit techy for a mo…

AI tools are trained on vast datasets, meaning their default config output is most times the "average of the internet"…

Bland and unoriginal.

They also lack the specific context about your brand, your tone, your audience, and your goals unless you provide it.

This is what we call the 'config'.

And its important… super important.

A non formatted generic config lead to your prompts giving generic output.

You see, Ai doesn't really have a human Spark, no matter how much we think it feels like it sometimes…

It has never lived experiences, had genuine emotion, never fell off a bicycle or broken an arm… and has never had a single unique perspective.

Althought it feels like it does, what it happening is this…

It can mimic and pattern match, but it can't originate soul… and definitely not in the James Brown kind of way.

Because of this, the results you get are technically proficient but hollow in nature…

It's why we can spot AI content a mile away.

The good news for you…

You can change this by changing your engagement with your AI.

You do this using an ignition to your config file…

I call this an Ignition Cycle, you'll see why…

The AI Content Ignition Cycle

Giving your config file life

This is where I get serious…

Please after reading this I hope I impart my knowldge from spending thousands of hours practiaclly breaking every AI down to its finer details…

The simple knowldge I share is this… stop chasing complex prompt formulas.

I know AI prompting is cool, and is a smack of dopamine, but, read on…

Even if at this stage you feel like I'm talking what goes against your very core being…

Your real leverage (moving forward from now, and the only one to last the ever adpating landscape) comes from a strategic, human-centered approach…

This cycle ensures your unique value isn't just an afterthought, but the driving force.

I remember reading an article by James Schramko years ago saying that the SEO content side had just turned into conversational communication, which is why he doubled down on podcast transcripts…

You getting the picture yet?

Longevity in this content industry is human, not machine… even if we use machine for 90% of it.

Stage 1: The Ignition Point… Your Strategic Human Briefing

Transformation starts before the prompt.

Don't expect AI to read your mind.

You're the strategist, and AI is your high-leverage assistant.

Get clear on your game plan:

  1. Define Your "Why": What's the specific goal of this content? (e.g., drive sign-ups, educate, build trust). Know the job you're hiring the content to do.
  2. Know Your Audience: Who are they really? What are their pains, desires, the language they use?
  3. Nail Your Core Message: The one key takeaway for your reader.
  4. Articulate Your Unique Angle: What's your specific insight or perspective that AI wouldn't know? This is your "outlier" element.

Treat this like a mini-creative brief.

More clarity upfront means less "dead" AI output.

So, instead of "Write about time management," try…

"Context for a blog post for overwhelmed solopreneurs feeling guilty about productivity. Core message: productivity is energy management. My unique angle: a 'Time Energetics' framework…"

One brings to fluff, the other, value.

Stage 2: Leveraged Co-Creation… Sculpting the AI Output

Don't expect a perfect first draft.

The AI's initial output is raw material.

Think of it like editing a junior writer, not publishing AI's first draft.

Your role is to guide, refine, and redirect with strategic intent.

  • Iterate with Feedback: Don't just regenerate. Tell the AI why its last attempt missed and what to change. "Too formal, make it conversational and add an example for beginners."
  • Chunk It Down: For longer content, prompt section by section or ask for outlines first. This gives you more control and leverage over the process.
  • Use "Role-Play" & Constraints: Most of you know this part…Assign AI a role ("Act as a seasoned financial advisor…") or a voice ("Write in the style of a skeptical journalist…"). Add constraints like tone or key points to guide its output.

I worked as an editor-in-chief for many years and would have loved to have such power at my fingertips…

Your job now (as the editor in chief of your AI content) is to elevate the raw output and ensure it aligns with your strategy.

This back-and-forth is where the magic of leveraged co-creation happens.

Stage 3: The Human Imprint, Infusing Your Irreplaceable Value

This is the make-or-break stage and the part most people get lazy with.

I'm going to almost 99% guarantee that the great content creators out there like Dan Koe follow a similar route now… if I'm wrong @thedankoe please accept my apology.

AI can get you 70–80% there, but the final 20–30% is all you… this is where your personality, experience, and unique insights make the content undeniably yours.

  • Inject Personal Stories & Anecdotes: AI can't fake your lived experiences. Add relevant personal stories, client successes (or failures), or observations that bring concepts to life. These build connection. But… you can imprint its memory with your experience. That's for another article I think.
  • Weave in Your Unique Frameworks: If you have specific models or ways of explaining things (like this AI Content Ignition Cycle itself), integrate them. Your original thinking is core. Naming frames… soooooo powerful. Think PUA, AIDA, etc…
  • Refine the Voice & Tone Until It Sings You: Read it aloud. Does it sound like you? Tweak phrasing and rhythm to match your natural style… even speak and record and add in.
  • Add Your Nuanced Opinions: AI often steers clear of strong takes. What's your genuine perspective that adds value and makes readers think? As for this article… This article is my take, my view vs prompt industrial complex.
  • Apply the "So What?" Test: For every key point, ask "So what?" Why does this matter to my reader? Add your human insight to explain the implication or benefit.

This isn't just editing… it's an infusion of your real humaness.

This makes content memorable, impactful, and dare I say it again… authentically yours.

Beyond Prompts

These three stages of The AI Content Ignition Cycle aren't just isolated tactics.

When consistently applied, they form the bedrock of a smarter ROI focused approach to content creation.

This is part of a bigger process I call the 'Clarity Engine', but even if you just start with this cycle, you'll feel the difference in the life and impact of your content.

From Dead Zombie Text to Real Life

Lifeless AI output isn't a given. I know it might feel like it now, but…

By shifting from passive prompting to active, strategic co-creation using a system like The AI Content Ignition Cycle, you will transform AI into a serious asset.

You don't need to be a "prompt engineer."

Image made by Ciaran Doyle

You need to be a clear thinker, an eye on the prize editor, and (what I feel most important) a courageous sharer of your unique human value.

These 3 stages put you back in the driver's seat.

…Stop settling for content 'meh'. Try this cycle today (or dont) and watch your AI content come alive, connect more deeply, and finally deliver the results you're after… not the slop the internet is used to.

The real win is fixing the system behind it, so you can stop wasting time and finally build momentum. Because great content without a clear execution engine is just a prettier way to stand still.
