Technological revolution and digital transformation

In essence, this prediction has come true and explains what we know today as the digital revolution, whose influence on individuals, the economy, and society is mostly due to the accelerated changes observed this century.

The digital transformation is heir to this technological change. He involves its incorporation into the different areas of an organization, particularly in the definition of its processes and the design of its strategies. In itself, it is a form of modernization of the organizations acquiring a transversal character to all sectors of activity.

The educational transformation

In this context, school education must not be left behind and, without prejudice, to preserve its indispensable humanist foundations. It must take up the challenge of integrating the past with the future, benefiting from the multiple modernizing levers that digital technologies offer -and will offer even more in the future.

The educational transformation will be digital, or it will not be. The effectiveness of digital technologies in education has produced some disappointment when its impact on student results has been evaluated.

As the OECD has warned from the analysis of large-scale data, "more technology is not always better." The key idea that emerges from systematic research is that it is not the technologies themselves that improve learning processes and student outcomes, but how they are integrated into teaching processes: the design and implementation of appropriate teaching methodologies.

Similarly, the integration of digital technologies in teaching does not contribute significantly to the improvement of school learning if it is not part of a well thought out. Well implemented instructional model, an ambitious and powerful instructional model will not be viable -or sustainable on a large scale- without the help of digital technologies and their future developments, particularly the latest Artificial Intelligence generation. And that instructional model is none other than that of personalized teaching.

Personalized teaching and Artificial Intelligence

The United States Department of Education, in the framework of its National Technology Education Plan, has formulated the following synthetic description of this notion, which has, however, a long pedagogical tradition:

"Personalized learning refers to instruction in which the pace of knowledge and the approach to teaching are organized according to the needs of each student. Learning objectives, teaching approach, and the content and sequence of instruction may vary according to the student's needs. Also, learning activities are meaningful and relevant to students, are interest-oriented, and are often undertaken on their initiative.

The difficulties that in other times posed the implementation of personalized education -when it was supported only by resources invested on paper- are now solved, with notable advantages, by the possibilities that can offer intelligent platforms capable of

Flexible organize multiple teaching resources in different ways and integrated with different possible learning sequences.

Acquiring representations on how students use the system allows making judgments on each student's learning characteristics and their results, with a view to their subsequent facilitation.

Reiterate - according to the information that emanates from the interaction with the student - the learning of concepts and procedures, although using in each case different resources and alternative and adapted sequences of education, until achieving the mastery, on the part of the student, of the desired knowledge and skills.

To provide students with personalized feedback based on data, they can correct their mistakes and learn from experience.

In their teaching activity, to facilitate the teacher to make strategic decisions, planning, guidance, and personal support to students, empirically based.

To provide the teacher with a wealth of information relevant to families about their children's school performance.

A robust version of hybrid teaching

Beyond this modest version of the notion of hybrid education, which has suddenly come to the fore due to the coronavirus pandemic, a more robust understanding of this concept should involve the integration of the following three pillars:

  • A personalization of teaching with student-centered methodologies.
  • A competency-based approach to the curriculum, with the ambition of learning for mastery (Mastery Learning).
  • The use of digital technologies in teaching, with artificial intelligence, is applied to the above.

Collaboration between public authorities, technology companies, publishers, and teachers can make the dream of educational transformation come true,
