WHAT IF YOU STOPPED DRINKING WATER?

Water is essential to life, but if we turn off the faucet, you won't have any more. What would happen to your organs if you stopped drinking water? How long would it take for you to transform into a piece of human jerky? Also, why would you drink your own urine?

Since most people are between 50 and 70 percent water, this is what would happen if you stopped drinking water. Water helps build your body on a microscopic level by creating cells and sustaining their chemical reactions to deliver nutrients. Nothing on this planet or in your life would be possible without good old water, so what if you stopped drinking water? How would your organs react giving up water would be a death sentence but before you turn into a pile of dust your body will go through some other radical changes in the first few hours. Your thirst would be minor, this would be the easy part throughout this whole process you'd need to slow down and take it easy, you don't want to sweat out the water left in you because you need every drop of this precious substance and your body knows that too. Your organs would hold on. That implies that you would urinate far less as a result of your kidneys transferring less water to your bladder.

Without water in your cells to facilitate the movement of nutrients, over the following two days, your blood would thicken and slow, and your heart rate would quickly rise to maintain appropriate oxygen levels. By day three, 4% of your body weight would have vanished as your body struggled for survival, but you wouldn't be in excellent shape.

Your blood would thicken and condense to such an extent that it would cause your skin to shrivel up like a raisin. The slightest bit of heat could cause your system to become overwhelmed because you don't have any more water to sweat off.

You would struggle to maintain consciousness as your blood pressure dropped, so you might want to go back to sleep so you can avoid the Real Pain that would occur on day four without water. The blood flow to non-essential organs like your kidneys and gut would be very low, cellular waste would accumulate in your system and those toxins would make your muscles sensitive and inflamed, making even the simplest tasks difficult to complete, and your brain would gradually start losing cognitive function.

Wait, you're so thirsty and worn out, should you, I don't know, drink your own urine to survive?

Stop again, that won't help.

Your body would have to work considerably harder to filter your urine at this point because it is so contaminated with garbage.

By day five, you would have lost 10% of your body weight in water, your liver would be about to stop functioning entirely, the rest of your organs would be reaching critically high temperatures, and you probably wouldn't have had a bowel movement in days. You were constipated during this entire period because your large intestine was soaking up any remaining water.

At this point, you would be regretting this terrible choice since the cartilage in your joints would be so dry that it would be difficult to move even an inch. In order to recover from this extreme, you would need to check into a hospital quickly. Doctors would then need to rehydrate your body with an IV in order to get electrolytes and sugar back into your system. This could take two to three days, but the damage could be permanent. Yes, you would have urinary tract infections and damaged or possibly diseased kidneys. You might even have to live with intestinal failure and hypertension for the rest of your life.

Dehydration is a significant issue that can result in shocking chronic health issues, but what if you went too far with your recovery and drank nothing but water for the rest of your life? If so, stay there because that's a story for another what if.

Thank you.
