Water 4 Mercy Supports Clearwater Central Catholic Students in Tanzania
Empowering Communities Through Clean Water and Sustainable Agriculture

Water 4 Mercy is a non-profit organization founded by Nermine Khouzam Rubin in 2018, dedicated to tackling critical water and food shortages in sub-Saharan Africa.
This USA-based initiative has made significant strides in improving the lives of countless individuals in need. Recently, six enthusiastic students from Clearwater Central Catholic High School embarked on a transformative journey to Tanzania, where they aimed to provide essential water and food resources to communities facing dire circumstances.
A Journey of Compassion and Service
The students’ trip to Tanzania was not just a mission; it was an eye-opening experience filled with emotional connections and cultural exchanges. Upon their arrival, they were greeted by villagers who welcomed them with traditional dances, songs, and gifts, showcasing the warmth of their hospitality.
Gracie Chung, a junior at Clearwater Central Catholic High School, shared her feelings about the reception: “They gave us such a warm welcome, and they were so happy to see us.”Throughout their stay, the students witnessed firsthand the harsh realities of water scarcity that many villagers endure daily.
They learned about the arduous tasks that women and children face while collecting water, often traveling long distances for a resource that is often contaminated. This experience deepened their understanding of the challenges these communities confront.
Since its establishment, Water 4 Mercy has had a profound impact on the region by implementing clean water systems in 19 villages. These initiatives have significantly improved the health and quality of life for approximately 70,000 people.
The organization is committed to expanding its efforts; during this trip, they pledged to adopt another village, further extending their reach.
Milestones Achieved
A significant highlight of the students’ visit was the inauguration of an agricultural drip irrigation system in Mabalangu Village. This milestone was celebrated with a plaque bearing the name of Clearwater Central Catholic High School, symbolizing their contribution to this vital project.
Alivia Tevis, a senior and board liaison for Water 4 Mercy, expressed her pride in their fundraising efforts: “Since 2021, we’ve raised over $36,000 through various fundraisers.
It’s beautiful to see our efforts result in clean drinking water and now nutritious food for the Mabalangu villagers.”Water 4 Mercy not only installs water systems but also trains local community members on how to maintain them.
They introduce advanced agricultural techniques that promote sustainability and economic growth within these villages. This approach ensures that the benefits of their initiatives are long-lasting.
A Call for Support
To continue its mission effectively, Water 4 Mercy actively seeks donations from individuals and organizations willing to support their cause. Nermine Khouzam Rubin emphasized the financial requirements for achieving sustainability in these communities: “It costs $100,000 to make a village fully sustainable.”
She hopes that increased visibility from media coverage will inspire more people to contribute to their efforts. For those interested in supporting Water 4 Mercy or starting a service chapter at their school or community, more information can be found on their website at water4mercy.org.
As a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, every donation goes directly toward projects aimed at providing sustainable water solutions and agricultural training in sub-Saharan Africa.
Transforming Lives Through Clean Water
Water 4 Mercy’s mission is not just about providing water; it’s about transforming lives through access to clean drinking water and sustainable agricultural practices. The organization recognizes that many people in sub-Saharan Africa lack basic human needs that many take for granted.
For instance, countless hours are spent searching for clean water instead of engaging in education or family activities.By implementing solar-powered water systems and training local communities to manage them effectively, Water 4 Mercy empowers these villages with ownership over their resources.
Rubin explained how these systems work: “We harness solar energy to drill down to aquifers and access clean water while training villagers on how to maintain this vital resource.”Once villages secure reliable access to clean water, they can focus on growing food for both personal consumption and sale.
The introduction of innovative farming techniques like drip irrigation allows communities to maximize food production while conserving precious water resources.
Conclusion
The journey undertaken by the students from Clearwater Central Catholic High School exemplifies the spirit of service and compassion that Water 4 Mercy embodies.
Their experiences in Tanzania not only provided immediate assistance but also fostered long-term relationships between cultures. As Water 4 Mercy continues its mission to alleviate water scarcity and improve food security in sub-Saharan Africa, it invites others to join this noble cause.
Through collective efforts and generous support from donors, Water 4 Mercy aims to enhance the quality of life for even more communities facing challenges related to water and food shortages. Together, we can contribute to building a future where every individual has access to clean water and nutritious food — essentials that are fundamental human rights.
