Everyone these days has a podcast. It’s the hip new thing for influencers to do! Since everyone has decided to pick up the trade, finding a good podcast to listen to can feel super daunting, especially when you’ve decided to trawl through Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or YouTube for content.

If you’re interested in exploring the STEM side of podcasts but have no idea where to start, use this list as your springboard. These podcasts are engaging, fascinating, and full of STEM content which will get your mind excited to learn. From the intricacies of quantum mechanics to the wonders of evolutionary biology, these podcasts are the perfect combination of education and entertainment.

Grab your headphones, settle in, and prepare to be enlightened and entertained like never before. Feed your curiosity with the very best in edutainment science podcasts!

Let’s Learn Everything!

I’m putting this one first because it’s my absolute favorite. The three hosts of this show are all science communicators from different disciplines who have an absolutely infectious enthusiasm about the topics they discuss. Seriously, I look forward to new episodes of this show being released, which are out every two weeks. In their episodes, they “teach each other about a science topic, answer questions, and learn about a miscellaneous topic”, all of which are fascinating to hear about. If you’re looking for high-quality, well-researched, and consistent information about STEM, history, and more, definitely give these folks a listen.

By the way, the hosts of this show also have some great social media accounts on the internet. I recommend following them on TikTok and X (Formerly known as Twitter) if you prefer short-form content to learn new information.

Sawbones: A Marital Tour of Misguided Medicine

For those of you particularly interested in medical history and medicine, Sawbones is the perfect edutainment Podcast to try. Focusing on the wildest theories and outdated medical practices, Dr. Sydnee McElroy and her husband tour “all the dumb, bad, gross, weird, and wrong ways we’ve tried to fix people” throughout history. This podcast shines because of the lovely dynamic between the hosts, which organically makes space for many jokes and a lot of educational moments. Plus, they’re just both truly kind, lovable people.

Side note, if you haven’t yet come across the McElroy Family in your podcast discovery journey, I can’t recommend their podcasts enough. Their collection of shows is super fun, nerdy, and just generally a great listen. You can check out their whole website here for a list of their content: Podcasts — The McElroy Family.

Just the Zoo of Us

I chose this podcast because it is super wholesome. Each week, both of the two hosts (Ellen and Christian Weatherford) bring up an animal of their choosing and share information on each of them, rating them “in the categories of effectiveness, ingenuity, and aesthetics”. They also have guest episodes where they deep-dive into information about creatures with the help of scientific experts. Both of the hosts, a husband and wife duo, have very cute and bubbly personalities which makes the entire 40+ weekly minutes a delight. Just the Zoo of Us is silly, light-hearted, and especially recommended for those of you who love animals and learning fun facts about Earth’s cutest creatures.

Ologies with Alie Ward

I actually just discovered this one, but I’m having an absolute blast listening through Alie Ward’s interviews. Her combination of humor and wit make for an interesting listen, and her collection of guests keeps each episode feeling fresh. If you’re curious about understanding tons of different scientific niches and sub-disciplines, check out Ologies, which focus on a different sort of scientist each week. Ward is an excellent interviewer and the show is edited really well to remain attention-grabbing for the entire hour-long duration of each episode.

Big Picture Science

Big Picture Science, produced by the SETI Institute, is the perfect podcast to choose if you adore listening to video essays on YouTube or watching documentaries. The hosts have a great sense of humor and excellent insight into what they speak about, which can include science, technology, debunking pseudoscience, and more. Out of all the options listed in this article, this one feels the most like a news segment, but the lovely personalities of Astronomer Seth Shostak and journalist Molly Bently keep the episodes feeling fresh and energetic throughout.

Whether you’re a science enthusiast or just curious about the world around you, be sure to tune in and let these podcasts take you on a journey of discovery. There are a massive amount of science podcasts out there, each offering its unique perspective and insights into the wonders of STEM. While I’ve highlighted the top 5 in this countdown, there are certainly many more worth exploring — ones that I’ve yet to discover, even!

If you have a favorite science podcast that didn’t make it onto this list, or if you’ve discovered a hidden gem that you think fellow STEM enthusiasts would enjoy, please share it in the comments! Your recommendations could spark the curiosity of others and lead to even more exciting discoveries.

Remember, the beauty of the scientific journey lies in its endless possibilities for exploration and discovery. So let’s come together as a community and continue to expand our knowledge and appreciation of the world around us through podcasting.
