Understanding Ujjwala Yojana: A Comprehensive Guide
A Look at the Ujjwala Yojana and Its Impact on Health, Environment, and Women Empowerment"

Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) was launched by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas (MOPNG) in May 2016.
This flagship scheme aims to provide clean cooking fuel, such as LPG, to rural and deprived households that traditionally rely on harmful fuels like firewood, coal, and cow-dung cakes. These traditional fuels have adverse effects on the health of rural women and the environment.
What is Ujjwala Yojana?
Ujjwala Yojana was inaugurated on May 1, 2016, in Ballia, Uttar Pradesh, by the Hon’ble Prime Minister of India, Shri. Narendra Modi. The scheme's initial target was to release 8 crore LPG connections to deprived households by March 2020.
On September 7, 2019, the Prime Minister handed over the 8th crore LPG connection in Aurangabad, Maharashtra. The scheme aims to reduce the health risks associated with traditional cooking methods and empower women by saving them time and effort.
Ujjwala Yojana 2.0
Ujjwala Yojana 2.0 was introduced with an additional allocation of 1.6 crore LPG connections, specifically targeting migrant households. This target was achieved in December 2022, bringing the total number of connections under the scheme to 9.6 crore.
The Government of India has further approved the release of an additional 75 lakh connections, increasing the overall target to 10.35 crore connections.

Women save time previously spent collecting firewood, allowing them to engage in more productive activities.
Limitations of Ujjwala Yojana:
Despite its success, the scheme faces challenges:
Reaching remote areas remains difficult.
While the initial connection is subsidized, the cost of refills can be a burden for some families.
Continued efforts are needed to raise awareness about the benefits and safe usage of LPG.
Companies Providing LPG under PMUY:
The major LPG providers under PMUY are Indane, BPCL, and HP Gas. These companies play a crucial role in implementing the scheme:
Indane: Indane is a brand of the Indian Oil Corporation, the largest commercial enterprise in India. Indane's extensive reach helps in meeting the demand for clean cooking fuel efficiently.
BPCL (Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited): BPCL is one of India's leading oil and gas companies, known for its extensive infrastructure and reliable service. It plays a critical role in the PMUY scheme by ensuring the timely and safe delivery of LPG cylinders. BPCL also conducts various awareness programs to educate users about safe LPG usage.
