Children and young people are exposed to a multitude of electronic devices such as smartphones, tablets, and computers. While these devices offer numerous benefits and educational opportunities, concerns have been raised about their potential impact on the developing minds of children and young people. This article delves into the effects of electronic devices and highlights both the positive and negative aspects to provide a comprehensive understanding of their influence.

The Positive Side:

Electronic devices can offer various advantages for children and young people. Educational applications and online resources provide interactive and engaging learning experiences, facilitating knowledge acquisition and enhancing cognitive skills. Moreover, digital devices can foster creativity through multimedia tools, allowing children to express themselves and explore artistic pursuits. Online platforms can also promote social connections, allowing youngsters to communicate with peers, share experiences, and develop friendships.

Negative Effects on Developing Minds:

1. Cognitive Development: Excessive screen time has been associated with attention and concentration difficulties. Overexposure to digital media may hinder the development of crucial cognitive skills, including problem-solving, critical thinking, and decision-making abilities. In schools today children and young people aren’t able to hold focus for more the 15 minutes. While on the devices their brains are in autopilots, in class they struggle because of low attention span.

2. Physical Health: Sedentary behaviours resulting from prolonged use of electronic devices contribute to a more sedentary lifestyle, which can lead to various health issues such as obesity, musculoskeletal problems, and sleep disturbances.

3. Social and Emotional Development: Excessive screen time can impact social interactions, as face-to-face communication is reduced. Young people may struggle with social skills and empathy, hindering their ability to form meaningful relationships in the offline world. Moreover, exposure to cyberbullying and online harassment can have a detrimental effect on mental well-being.

4. Sleep Disruptions: The blue light emitted by electronic devices can interfere with the production of melatonin, a hormone that regulates sleep. Excessive use of electronic devices, particularly before bedtime, can disrupt sleep patterns and lead to sleep deprivation, affecting mood, cognitive performance, and overall well-being. Most of our fore- parents had the eight hours sleep most of the time.

5. The Brain: the brains of young people are still being developed, the lack of sleep and the constant exposures to these devices; will affect how resilient they will be in the future. How they will be able to take on life’s roller-coaster.

Striking a Balance: It is essential to strike a balance when it comes to the use of electronic devices in the lives of children and young people. Consider the following strategies:

1. Set Limits: Establish clear guidelines regarding screen time, ensuring a healthy balance between device usage and other activities such as physical exercise, social interactions, and creative endeavours.

2. Encourage Offline Activities: Promote engagement in a variety of offline activities such as reading, sports, hobbies, and imaginative play, fostering holistic development.

3. Use Technology Mindfully: Encourage the use of age-appropriate, educational content and engage in activities together to guide and monitor their digital experiences.

4. Create Tech-Free Zones: Designate specific areas or times in the home where electronic devices are not allowed, encouraging face-to-face interactions and quality family time.

Conclusion: Electronic devices offer both benefits and potential drawbacks for the developing minds of children and young people. It is crucial to find a balance that maximizes the positive aspects while minimizing the negative impacts. By setting boundaries, encouraging offline activities, and fostering mindful use of technology, we can help children and young people navigate the digital world in a way that promotes their overall well-being and healthy development. Ultimately, it is our responsibility to guide and support young individuals in their digital journeys, ensuring they harness the power of technology without sacrificing their mental, physical, and social development.
