The Curse of Evil

Ebere lay there, weak and exhausted, on the cold hospital bed. Her illness, which had been persisting for some time, had taken a turn for the worse. Without the means to afford proper medical care, she had been surviving on mere drugs, her condition deteriorating with each passing day.

Her husband, Okechukwu, couldn't bear to see her suffering any longer. Desperate to save his beloved wife, he borrowed money from a friend and rushed her to the hospital, holding onto hope for her recovery.

However, that hope was shattered when the doctor, favoring a wealthy patient who had recently been admitted, neglected Ebere in her critical state. Okechukwu's pleas fell on deaf ears as he watched helplessly, his heart breaking at the sight of his dying wife being pushed aside.

In a last-ditch effort to save Ebere, Okechukwu bravely confronted the doctor, begging for her immediate attention. But it was too late. By the time the doctor finally turned her focus to Ebere, it was already too late. She had passed away, leaving behind her family.

As he stood there, pained and angry at the injustice and neglect that had taken his wife from him, Okechukwu made a vow. In memory of Ebere, he swore to do everything in his power to ensure that their son, Jerry, would receive the education and opportunity to study medicine.

Jerry held a special place in Okechukwu's heart as his only son, despite also having a 10-year-old daughter. When Jerry excelled in his Jamb exams and secured admission to a popular university in the country, Okechukwu offered him words of wisdom and encouragement. He urged Jerry to strive for excellence and to make him, his late mother, and his younger sister proud.

Jerry's calm nature, intelligence, and good looks attracted the attention of many of his female coursemates, who were drawn to him like bees to honey. Some of his male coursemates grew jealous of Jerry's academic success and popularity. Despite their flashy clothes, expensive cars, and lavish spending in clubs, the girls consistently showed more interest in Jerry.

The situation worsened when a guy named Wisdom, also known as Wizzy, felt threatened by Jerry's popularity. He resorted to seeking help from his fellow cult members. They devised a plan to lure Jerry into their cult group, hoping to take his position and steal some of his spotlight.

Wizzy, the leader of a notorious cult group on campus called the "Sacred Brotherhood of Fraud," targeted individuals eager to make quick money through fraud.

During one of their cult meetings, Wizzy instructed KCee, one of his loyal followers, to bring Jerry to their next gathering by any means necessary. "You must ensure Jerry attends our next meeting. Use any method at your disposal, whether it's beating, deceiving him, or even force. Just make sure he's here," Wizzy commanded KCee, who eagerly accepted the challenging task.

Driven by loyalty to Wizzy and the help he was getting from him, KCee set out to lure Jerry into their cult.

It was a quiet afternoon when KCee approached Jerry unexpectedly. "I would love to go with you to the night class today. Exams are approaching fast, and I need someone to study with," KCee said.

Jerry was surprised at KCee's sudden interest in studying, knowing him as someone more focused on partying. Nonetheless, Jerry gladly accepted KCee's offer to accompany him to the night class. KCee seemed pleased that his plan was falling into place as he smiled to himself and walked away.

By 8 o'clock at night, the night class was bustling with students taking advantage of the steady light to study. Jerry waited outside the hostel for KCee, who arrived shortly after. As they made their way to the night class, a group of guys confronted them, pointing guns and forcing them into a car.

Jerry couldn't believe his eyes when he realized it was KCee's own car they were being led into. Whispering in disbelief, Jerry asked KCee, "Is this not your car?" To which KCee responded with a mocking smile, revealing the true intentions behind his sudden interest in studying together.

The courtroom fell silent as the judge's final verdict echoed through the room. Jerry stood with a heavy heart, realizing the gravity of his actions and the consequences he now faced. Regina's eyes remained fixed on him, filled with a mixture of sorrow and regret.

As they were escorted to the police van, Jerry couldn't help but feel a sense of profound loss. Not only had he lost his freedom, but he had also lost the trust and respect of his sister. The weight of his choices bore down on him as he contemplated the long years ahead in prison.

Meanwhile, Regina struggled with conflicting emotions. On one hand, she felt a sense of relief that justice was served for their father's murder. On the other hand, she couldn't shake the pain of seeing her brother led away in handcuffs. Despite everything, she still loved him and hoped that he would find redemption someday.

The days turned into weeks, and the weeks into months as Jerry adjusted to life behind bars. He found solace in the routine of prison life, but the guilt and shame of his past actions weighed heavily on his conscience. He often thought about Regina and wondered how she was coping without him.
