The compass is one of the most important inventions in human history and has played a huge role in world history in areas such as exploration, travel and trade. Therefore, the history of the compass is quite long and has an interesting story.

The compass consists of a box in which a needle or plate with magnetic properties rotates freely. Using the difference between magnetic north and magnetic south, the compass is a tool used to determine direction. Today, compasses are widely used in navigation, map making, geology, astronomy, naval and military work.

The origin of the compass dates back to approximately 1000 BC. Chinese scholars discovered a type of magnetic stone and called it a compass. The first compasses were made using a freely rotating needle on a magnetic stone suspended by a gender-determining silk thread. In this way, the direction with respect to magnetic north could be determined.

Although there are different theories about how the compass got to Europe, in general, many researchers are of the opinion that the compass came to the Middle East and the Mediterranean region via the Silk Road. It was first adopted by the Islamic world and then spread to Europe.

A compass, first made by the Englishman John Goss in the 16th century, is considered to be Europe's first compass. This first compass could determine magnetic north and magnetic south.

The use of the compass played an important role, especially in exploration, travel and navigation. In the 15th and 16th centuries, European sailors used the compass to chart the world and make their explorations. Also, in shipping, the compass is vital for determining an accurate direction and has played a large role in preventing many marine accidents.

The invention of the compass is also an important step for the advancement of science and technology. The compass is an essential tool for understanding magnetism and magnetic fields. In addition, research on magnetic fields has contributed to the development and application of fields such as magnetism, electricity and electromagnetism.

The evolution of the compass was further developed over time. In the 19th century, more sensitive compasses were developed that could measure changes in magnetic north direction. This allowed voyages to be planned more accurately, especially in shipping. Also, in the 20th century, magnetic compasses were replaced by electronic compasses based on magnetic sensors. This provided more accurate and precise measurements and made compasses even easier to use.

Today, compasses are still widely used in many fields. It is especially used in areas such as maritime, aviation, geology, military affairs, land exploration, rescue operations, sports and recreation. It can also be used in conjunction with other navigation tools such as GPS.

The discovery of the compass offered a permanent solution to humanity's problem of navigation. It has provided a great advantage especially for explorations and travels. For example, famous travelers such as Marco Polo and Columbus made their discoveries thanks to the compass. The use of the compass expanded the boundaries of exploration and contributed to the creation of the world map.

The use of the compass is also important for navigation. Compasses are used to plan ships' routes. It is also used to locate ships lost due to factors such as bad weather or haze. Today, electronic compasses based on magnetic sensors used with modern maritime navigation systems provide more sensitive and accurate measurements.

The compass is also widely used in military affairs. In military navigation, compasses are used to determine the position of troops. In military operations, compasses are also used to guide tactical movements and shooting.

Compasses are also used in many fields such as land exploration, rescue operations, sports and recreation. For example, mountaineers, campers, and hikers use compasses to find the right direction.

As a result, the history of the compass is a tool that offers a permanent solution to the problem of finding direction and is widely used in many fields. He also contributed to research on magnetism and magnetic fields. The compass has been an important step in the development of science and technology and has played a large role in many areas such as exploration, travel, naval and military affairs.
