AI is rapidly emerging as a transformative force in our global landscape. Both China and the US are actively advancing the development of AI technologies. While AI holds the potential to enhance productivity, it also poses a significant threat to employment opportunities. Moreover, the utilization of AI for corporate surveillance raises concerns about its impact on democratic principles. The advent of AI was exemplified by the game of Go, marking a new era for this field. However, it is crucial to acknowledge that AI can exacerbate inequality and create divisions among nations, leading to the emergence of AI superpowers. China, in particular, has taken the lead in AI advancements, thanks to its ambitious tech entrepreneurs and venture capitalists. Recognizing the criticality of AI for the future, China has made substantial efforts to catch up with foreign companies and invest in its development. The astonishing progress made by China in implementing AI within a mere 2.5 years is truly remarkable, with approximately 17-18 billion-dollar AI companies currently thriving. Chinese universities play a pivotal role in nurturing ambitious young tech enthusiasts who compete with innovative ideas, supported by a new generation of Chinese venture capitalists. China's entrepreneurial spirit is characterized as tenacious, rapid, winner-take-all, and driven by an incredible work ethic. However, it is important to note that China's social credit system, although powerful, has raised concerns due to its potential implications.

Currently, Shanghai is experimenting with this system. China has set its sights on leading the world in AI by 2030, aiming to establish itself as the global frontrunner in this transformative technology. Self-driving trucks have the potential to be ten times safer than human drivers. Deep learning has revolutionized various sectors of society, with computers now able to acquire knowledge independently from data and examples. Machines play a crucial role in enhancing creativity and finding solutions to pressing issues. Additionally, deep learning has shown promise in predicting early-stage conditions in breast cancer. Truck drivers, such as Shawn and Hope Cumbee, are concerned about automation due to the growing wage disparity. Companies like Embark are already utilizing driverless trucks on the interstate. While AI may pose a threat to approximately 50% of jobs in the next 15 years, it is not yet close to completely replacing humans. Various opinions exist in Silicon Valley regarding the impact of AI, with Kai-Fu Lee openly discussing the negative aspects. Automation is considered a silent job killer, contributing to a decrease in the standard of living. Offshoring is only responsible for 20% of job losses, while productivity growth is the main driver of job displacement. Although automation leads to increased productivity, it also results in job loss, leading to a decline in the standard of living by 10% to 15% over the last 15 years. The rapid changes brought about by automation and AI are disproportionately affecting women and individuals in low-paying jobs in the job market.

Numerous routine and information-processing positions, such as cashiers and clerical staff, face a significant risk of automation. Workers are finding it challenging to adjust to the evolving job market without economic stability and access to training. The current economic landscape is characterized by surveillance capitalism, which commodifies private human experiences. Tech giants like Google and Facebook utilize behavioral prediction to generate revenue, raising concerns about privacy and corporate surveillance. The recent California law granting residents control over their digital data is a step towards addressing these issues. Artificial intelligence and surveillance technologies are increasingly integrated into various aspects of daily life, sometimes without individuals' awareness. In countries with authoritarian regimes such as China, the utilization of AI and surveillance technology has reached an alarming extent, leading to reports of human rights violations and the establishment of political re-education camps for ethnic minorities. The global landscape is currently dominated by only two AI superpowers, and the United States has expressed concerns regarding potential back-door access to the Chinese government through Huawei's 5G equipment.

Chinese tech companies, like Megvii, face challenges in accessing American technology. As a result, the concept of engagement between China and the US is now being questioned. If these two nations are fundamentally antagonistic towards each other, it would signify a significant shift in our world. AI possesses the capability to be both beneficial and detrimental, necessitating governments to strike a delicate balance. Governments must exercise restraint in their utilization of AI to ensure a secure environment without infringing upon individual rights and privacy. Every country will be tempted to exceed the boundaries of AI usage as desired by its citizens. The progress of AI poses a threat to democracy unless we collectively enhance our wisdom to effectively manage its increased power. Given the high stakes involved, we must not disregard these concerns lightly.
