At first, it might shock you—or even gross you out. But believe it or not, your cat is not trying to scare you or be mean. In fact, they might be trying to show love in the only way they know how. Let’s take a closer look at why cats bring us these so-called “gifts” and what it means for your relationship with your furry friend. Natural Instinct Cats are hunters by nature. Even if your cat has never been outside or never had to catch its own food, that natural hunting instinct still lives inside them. In the wild, cats hunt to survive. And for those living in the wild or even on farms, bringing prey back is just part of what they do. Your house cat may never need to hunt for food, thanks to the meals you provide. But their instincts don’t go away. So when your cat brings you a dead mouse or bird, it’s acting on something deeply built into its behavior. --- A Lesson from Mom When your cat was a kitten, their mother brought them food—sometimes live prey and sometimes already dead. This wasn’t just to feed them; it was also to teach them how to hunt and survive. It’s one of the ways mother cats teach their young to become strong and independent. So when your adult cat brings you a “gift,” they might be doing what their own mother did for them. It’s like they’re saying, “Here, I brought you something to eat,” or “Look what I caught—I’m helping!” They may even see you as someone who needs a little help. Cats may not always meow or rub against your leg when they want to be noticed. Sometimes, they use their actions. Bringing you something unusual is a surefire way to get you to react.
