If Opportunity Doesn’t Knock, Build a Door: The Power of Creating Your Own Path
Opportunities are often seen as rare, unpredictable moments that come knocking at our doors, waiting to be seized. However, what happens when opportunity never arrives? Do we sit idly, waiting for a chance that may never come, or do we take matters into our own hands? The quote by Milton Berle, If opportunity doesn’t knock, build a door, encapsulates the idea of taking initiative, being proactive, and creating our own paths rather than relying on fate. Many successful people throughout history have exemplified this principle. They didn’t wait for circumstances to favor them; they created their own opportunities through persistence, innovation, and determination. When we analyze the lives of entrepreneurs, inventors, and leaders, a common theme emerges: they refused to wait for opportunity and instead took decisive action to shape their futures. Consider the story of Oprah Winfrey, who was born into poverty in rural Mississippi. Her journey to becoming one of the most influential media moguls in history wasn’t a result of waiting for the perfect job offer or the right connections. She created opportunities by working tirelessly, pushing boundaries, and refusing to accept limitations. She built her own platform, ultimately shaping an industry that once had little space for someone like her. Oprah's story is a prime example of how building a door can lead to unparalleled success. Similarly, Steve Jobs didn’t wait for an ideal moment to create Apple. He and Steve Wozniak worked in a garage, building the first Apple computer without a massive corporate structure or resources backing them. They weren’t given an opportunity by the tech giants of their time; they built their own company from the ground up, disrupting the industry and redefining technology. Their story proves that waiting for an opportunity isn’t always the best strategy—sometimes, you have to create one. The mindset of building a door instead of waiting for opportunity also applies to everyday life. Many people desire better jobs, financial stability, or personal growth, yet they remain stagnant, hoping for a lucky break. The reality is that opportunities rarely present themselves without effort. Those who actively seek knowledge, improve their skills, and network with the right people increase their chances of success. For instance, someone looking to transition into a new career may struggle to find immediate job offers. Instead of waiting indefinitely, they can take courses, gain certifications, or even start freelancing to gain experience. These actions create doors that can eventually open up greater opportunities. The willingness to learn and adapt sets apart those who succeed from those who remain in the same place year after year. In business, the concept of building a door is crucial. Many aspiring entrepreneurs hesitate to start their ventures because they believe they need the perfect conditions—funding, connections, or market demand. However, the most successful business owners often begin with limited resources. They launch their ideas, learn from failures, and adjust along the way. Waiting for the perfect moment can result in missed opportunities, while taking the first step, even when conditions aren’t ideal, can lead to unexpected growth. The entertainment industry provides numerous examples of individuals who refused to wait for opportunities and instead created their own paths. Tyler Perry, for instance, struggled for years before his work gained recognition. He wrote, produced, and performed his own plays, even when they initially failed. His persistence in creating opportunities for himself eventually led to massive success, with his own film studio and numerous box office hits. Had he waited for someone else to give him a chance, he might have never reached his level of influence. Another compelling story is that of J.K. Rowling, who faced numerous rejections before finally publishing *Harry Potter*. She didn’t let the closed doors discourage her. Instead, she kept pushing forward until she found an opportunity. Her resilience turned her into one of the most successful authors in history. This underscores the importance of persistence and self-initiative in achieving one’s goals. Building a door also applies to social and personal growth. People who struggle with relationships, friendships, or finding their place in society often feel as if opportunities to connect with others are out of their control. Instead of waiting for the right social circle to accept them, they can take the initiative by joining groups, attending events, or even starting their own communities. By creating environments where opportunities can flourish, they increase their chances of forming meaningful connections. In the digital age, creating opportunities has become even more accessible. The internet allows individuals to showcase their talents, start businesses, and build personal brands without needing traditional gatekeepers. Content creators, freelancers, and entrepreneurs now have the power to reach global audiences without waiting for approval from industry leaders. Those who take advantage of these tools build their own doors, unlocking success that was once unattainable. Resilience is a key factor in this mindset. Not every door we build will immediately lead to success. There will be failures, setbacks, and moments of doubt. However, those who persist and continue constructing new doors eventually find the right opportunity. It may not always come in the expected form, but the effort put into creating chances will always pay off in the long run. Fear often holds people back from taking action. Many hesitate to start something new because they fear failure or rejection. However, the only guaranteed way to fail is to never try. Building a door requires stepping out of one’s comfort zone, taking risks, and embracing uncertainty. Those who do so often discover that the opportunities they create are far greater than anything they could have passively waited for. Life doesn’t always hand out opportunities on a silver platter. The most successful and fulfilled individuals understand that waiting isn’t a strategy it’s a passive state that rarely leads to breakthroughs. Instead of hoping for change, they take action, build their own doors, and walk through them confidently.

What Classes Would I Need to Take to Become an Engineer?
Do you love math? Do you enjoy calculus specifically? Well, engineering may be an academic pathway for you to consider. It can be a bit daunting at first when thinking about where exactly to start with the journey of becoming an engineer. The purpose of this piece is to give high school students or college students the basic foundation of understanding the requirements for an engineering pathway. I've been working in academic advising for the last several years. Many students come in and they are interested in pursuing an engineering pathway, but they just do not know where to begin. I work at a state college which means we typically would help college students with their lower level associates degree and then they would transfer out to a bigger university for a more specialized engineering degree program.
