TAFCOP: A Government Initiative to Prevent SIM Fraud and Protect Mobile Users

The Telecom Analytics for Fraud Management and Consumer Protection (TAFCOP) is an initiative by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), Government of India, designed to safeguard mobile subscribers from potential fraud and enhance consumer protection. Launched as part of the broader Sanchar Saathi platform, TAFCOP empowers users to monitor and manage the number of mobile connections registered under their names, thereby preventing unauthorized usage and potential misuse.
In India, individual subscribers are permitted to have a maximum of nine mobile connections across all telecom service providers, with a limit of six connections in certain regions like Jammu & Kashmir, Assam, and the North Eastern states. However, instances have been reported where unscrupulous elements obtain multiple SIM cards using another person's identity without their knowledge, leading to fraudulent activities. To combat this, TAFCOP provides a user-friendly portal where subscribers can log in using their mobile numbers and verify all connections associated with their identity. If any unauthorized or unnecessary connections are identified, users can report them directly through the portal for further action.
The process to utilize TAFCOP's services is straightforward. Subscribers need to visit the official TAFCOP portal and enter their active mobile number. An OTP (One-Time Password) is sent to the provided number for verification. Upon successful authentication, the portal displays a list of all mobile numbers registered under the subscriber's name. Users can then review this list and flag any numbers that are unfamiliar or no longer in use. Once reported, the respective telecom service provider initiates a re-verification process, and if discrepancies are found, appropriate actions such as suspension or disconnection of the unauthorized numbers are undertaken.
TAFCOP's integration into the Sanchar Saathi platform enhances its functionality by offering additional services aimed at consumer protection. These include facilities to block lost or stolen mobile handsets, verify the authenticity of mobile devices, and report unsolicited commercial communications or spam. By consolidating these services, the platform ensures a comprehensive approach to telecom security and consumer awareness.
The implementation of TAFCOP has yielded significant results. As of January 2025, the portal has received over 14.9 million requests from subscribers seeking to verify their registered mobile connections, with more than 11.8 million cases successfully resolved. This proactive engagement indicates a growing awareness among consumers about the importance of monitoring their telecom resources and taking necessary actions to prevent misuse.
Purpose of TAFCOP
The primary goal of TAFCOP is to prevent misuse of mobile connections by ensuring that individuals have control over the SIM cards registered in their name. In India, an individual is allowed to have a maximum of nine mobile connections at a time, with a lower limit of six connections in states like Jammu & Kashmir, Assam, and the North Eastern regions. However, cases of identity theft and unauthorized SIM issuance have been reported, leading to fraudulent activities. The TAFCOP portal allows users to check all active mobile numbers associated with their Aadhaar-linked identity and report any unknown or unnecessary connections.
In addition to its primary services, TAFCOP encourages users to provide feedback to continually improve the platform's effectiveness. Subscribers can submit their suggestions or report issues directly through the portal, ensuring that the system remains responsive to user needs and adapts to emerging challenges in telecom fraud.
Overall, TAFCOP represents a significant advancement in India's efforts to secure its telecommunications infrastructure and protect consumers from fraud. By empowering subscribers with the tools to monitor and manage their mobile connections, the initiative fosters a safer and more transparent telecom environment.
