Focus - "slow employment" phenomenon]

Entering the "Golden Nine and Silver Ten", job hunting and recruiting usher in the peak season of the year. While most college graduates are anxious and busy to find jobs, a small number of students are not in a hurry to find employment, nor to continue their education, but choose to go on study tours, teaching or business visits, etc., and slowly consider their life path. This practice is called "slow employment".

According to statistics, more and more post-90s, especially post-95s young people in China are leaving the traditional "work after graduation" model and becoming "slow-employed". Under the pressure of the new pneumonia epidemic, the record number of college graduates on one side, and the adjustment of recruitment plans by employers due to the epidemic on the other side, the phenomenon of "slow employment" of 2020 graduates have become more prominent. According to an online survey conducted for 88,000 fresh graduates nationwide, 8% of them chose "slow employment".

Although "slow employment" is only a niche choice, the heated debate in recent years shows that it has become a noteworthy social phenomenon. How to prevent "slow employment" from turning into "lazy employment" or "no employment"? Under the epidemic, the phenomenon of "slow employment" has become more and more prominent behind the reflection of what is worthy of attention. This reporter conducted an in-depth interview.

1. "Slow down the pace, only to be more determined to move forward"

Many people think that it is the right way of life to find a job after graduation. But now some young people choose to go against that path. He Wei (a pseudonym), who graduated from a science and technology university in Hunan, is one of them.

Employment

He Wei studied thermal and power engineering major and in his senior year had gone to a thermal power plant internship. During this internship time, he determined that he does not like to do the work of the profession, but the future wants to go road is not fully thought out. He was not willing to blindly find a job in a power plant to kill his passion and time. So, he chose to find a direction in "slow employment".

He Wei, who grew up loving books and quietness, had the idea of becoming a teacher in a school. He prepared for his teaching certificate while working part-time at an educational training institution in his city to increase his knowledge of the teaching profession and himself. After a year of preparation, this year he was successfully accepted by a local middle school as a junior high school physics teacher.

Li Rongchen, a graduate student of management accounting at the University of Melbourne, represents some of the young people who agree with the idea of "slow employment". He believes that more and more post-90s and post-95s are choosing "slow employment", which reflects this group's increasing sense of responsibility and more prudent attitude toward choosing their development direction.

"Whether you choose a profession or a job, without a full understanding of the industry, it is difficult to find out the right direction for your development. Many people around me regret the profession they once chose. Reasonable 'slow employment' is responsible for yourself. Choose the right 'track' for yourself, and the effort you put in will be more meaningful." Li Rongchen said.

Compared to domestic, the "slow employment" phenomenon in many Western countries does not appear to be an alternative. Before graduating from high school, during college, after graduating from college, and even in the period just after working, some young people put off their next studies or jobs and spend half a year or a year participating in internships, volunteer work, or study tours. This time is called "gap year" (gap year).

"Young people who return to school or work after a gap year are likely to have more confidence and a more positive attitude toward their chosen profession or job. Some foreign studies have shown that students who have had a gap year generally do better in college than those who have not had a gap year.

"The phenomenon of 'slow employment' reflects the diverse views of the young generation on career choice. They have their personalized understanding of a good job and are willing to bear the pressure and make efforts for their ideal job. This is worthy of recognition. They 'slow down' only to move forward more firmly." Wu Xingchen, executive director of the United Front Theory Research Center of Tianjin Socialist Academy, said, "However, as adults, they should be responsible for themselves, and 'slow employment' should be based on self-reliance and their ability to support themselves."

2. "Slow" is not the purpose, the key is to have meaning

"Slow employment" is a neutral word. For a reasonable "slow", society should be more understanding and tolerant, but for graduates, "slow" is not the purpose, not for the sake of "slow" and " Slow". Whether fast or slow, young people find their own "track" as soon as possible is the key.

Although he will only graduate in 2021, Li Yongchen is already busy putting in his resume to find a job. For international students like him who decide to work in China after graduation, they have to consider the rigid requirement of "fresh graduates only" for many domestic companies. "And I have a clear plan for my postgraduate major and job during my undergraduate period, so there is no need for 'slow employment." Li Rongchen told the reporter.

Ye Xiaowen (a pseudonym), who graduated from a university in Beijing majoring in diplomacy, said frankly that some graduates choose "slow employment" as a helpless choice. Some students chose the profession in their "parents' words", not out of their own interest, and do not want to work after graduation; some students choose the profession and market demand does not match, and it is difficult to find a suitable job; some students in front of the fierce competition in employment defeated, forced to choose "slow employment". This year, when graduation meets the epidemic, there will probably be more graduates joining the "slow employment" group.

If you have no choice but to choose "slow employment", how to "slow" the meaning? "The time of 'slow employment' varies from person to person, preferably not more than a year, and most importantly, there must be a clear plan, not because of the disappearance of study or work pressure on the aimless, evolved into a vacation, and not to become a muddle 'gnawing old man '. It should be borne in mind that this period is a 'pathfinding' process and that serious and prudent decisions should be made." Li Rongchen said.

The recruiter of a logistics company in Beijing said that for the "slow-employed" students, the company looks at what he has done during this time. If there is nothing to do, idle, this will make people doubt the student's responsibility and enterprising spirit. The reason for "slowing down" is to make your pace more determined and competitive. A reasonable "slow down" is the only way to convince people.

3. Schools and society need to "think fast"

For college graduates, it is their wish to find a job of their choice. The purpose of "slow employment" is to achieve higher quality employment. Behind the phenomenon of "slow employment" is not only the change in young people's view on career selection, but also reflects many issues that deserve attention.

"Schools set up career planning courses to help students clarify their career interests and fully recognize themselves; for majors with unclear employment directions, school curriculums are more compatible with social needs; enterprises and institutions give college students more opportunities for internship exchanges and understanding of the industry; parents respect their children's ideas more and do not impose their concepts on them ......" These are the genuine wishes of young students.

Graduation job search, for young students, is a special stage. The whole country and all departments around the country for the employment of college graduates can not be said to have made great efforts. "The employment of college graduates is a matter of national planning and social stability, and 'slow employment' spurs the community to carry out 'fast thinking." Fang Weibing, vice president and professor of the Institute of Marxist Chinese Studies of Hubei Institute of Science and Technology, said that to make graduates better realize their career aspirations, in addition to student's efforts, they also need the joint help of schools, parents, society and other parties.

Fang Weibing said that schools should strengthen education on career planning and guidance on employment skills for students, pay attention to follow-up research on graduates, especially on "slow-employed" graduates, understand the situation and reasons for not being employed, and provide timely psychological counseling and employment guidance; society should provide more opportunities for college students to contact the industry and society; parents Parents should not only respect their children but also correct their misconceptions in time, encourage their children to face challenges and start their career.
