Developed for close-quarters fighting during World War I, the trench knife is well-known for its unusual design and useful applications. Trench knives are deadly in small, cramped areas like these, with a double-edged blade that usually measures between 6 and 8 inches. To offer additional protection and enable soldiers to use the weapon as a striking tool in hand-to-hand combat, the handle frequently featured a knuckle guard or brass knuckles. A spiked pommel was also added to some models, increasing its usefulness as a bludgeoning and stabbing tool.
Because of these characteristics, soldiers could use the trench knife for both offensive and defensive purposes in the harsh conditions of trench warfare, which made it an indispensable tool. The multifunctional design of the trench knife was demonstrated by its use for practical tasks like cutting through barbed wire and preparing meals, in addition to its primary purpose in combat. Through the hard conditions of the war, its sturdy construction and ergonomic design made sure it remained a dependable and effective weapon.
