One of my fantasies: downloaded intelligence

I’ve come across many people, some I’ll consider very smart and others I’ll consider very stupid and sometimes they intertwine. One of the most shocking things I’ve noticed is that being smart or stupid isn’t a general or objective appreciation of a person’s intellect, while I might consider a person stupid, some other person might consider them very intelligent and vice versa. Also, a person might be stupid on some topics and very smart on others, the proof of this is evident when you see people who didn’t go very far in school still be able to excel in society. It’s hard to call a person who is doing well in society a stupid person because they clearly a getting somethings right despite their poor intellect.

A much more objective metric is knowledgeable and ignorant, this can be measured and you can easily determine from this whether a person is smart or not. We all see knowledgeable and ignorant persons all the time and we are both to some degree too, I certainly am ignorant of the inner workings of rocket science, I couldn’t even tell you were it begins or how it works but I am knowledgeable about being a writer on medium, I certainly can give some insights on that. To a rocket scientist I’ll be ignorant and quite stupid if I spoke on that meanwhile, to a person trying to get on medium writing, I’ll be very knowledgeable and smart.

Download intelligence

It pains me to see people I’ll consider ignorant going through so many difficulties in society; they face problems that to me could be solved in an instant if they had the right information. Whether its in our families, on the streets or close friends, we all have people around us who are ignorant and are going through a lot of hardships, without even mentioning that we too could be in the same situation, our ignorance could be the cause of a lot of our problems in actuality. This is why one of the fantasies I have is a device that permits us to download intelligence directly into our brains.

I know it sounds a little crazy but bear with me, imagine if you could wear something like a helmet and you get intelligence downloaded into your brain, in an instant you could be as knowlegeable as Einstein was. This isn’t a device which exist, I am just envisioning it at this point, imagine if such a device existed where you could instantly become knowledgeable, smart, intelligent and wise, the device won’t implant memories but it would develop your reasoning and permit you to become smart, you’ll be able to learn anything and everything in an instant.

Status quo

The current way we gain intelligence is through decades of long and tedious studies through a school system which is highly inefficient, from our tender ages of 3 years we begin school and its only after 20 years we can be considered as having a university level intelligence. That’s at least 1/4 of your life gone when you look at the life expectancy in developed countries and that’s 1/3 of your life gone in underdeveloped countries. We can all agree that it is a huge chunk of our lives we have to dedicate just to be a functional human being in society, without mentioning how inefficient it is and for some it is inaccessible.

Eternal renewal

However with such a device, you just go in for what could look like a doctor’s appointment, you place the helmet on and intelligence is safely downloaded in your brain, even if it is over multiple sessions. With this we would be able to deal with so many problems currently faced by society and innovate at a much faster pace. When you look at the greater scheme of things, it would seem every generation comes and faces the exact same issues all previous generations faced with more being added, even after Millenia we haven’t been able to deal with corruption, crime, injustice, poverty, famine etc every generation that comes faces the same issues and its not like we don’t know or have the solution, we do have the solutions to all these problems but what is holding us back is a collective mindset towards this.

Conclusion

These issues particularly are similar to an epidemic, fixing it in one place isn’t going to eradicate it entirely, its only by eradicating it everywhere that it finally goes extinct but its hard to do so when everyone isn’t on board.

This is just a fantasy of mine but with the current rate at which technology is evolving, this might soon become reality.
