Let Me Speak
From age five until I was roughly ten years old I lost my voice completely. Literally, no sound. Something inside me told me not to speak because speaking words meant I would protest, and that would have meant dangerous, dark consequences adding to an already tenebrous existence. Not only were my foster family abusive, they were also deeply religious; the type believing in the wrath of god and Armageddon. Because we were all allegedly living in ‘the end of days’, education was only tolerated up to what was required by law, but no further. I’m not sure why, but perhaps I stopped speaking to escape the spartan brutality selectively meted out to me. School was a refuge, but general overwhelm rendered me unable to articulate words with my own sounds. Instead, I listened, I read, and I wrote things down. Despite the countless books I voraciously devoured, I’d become accustomed to my aphasia, so I reposed within the solace of words and stories whilst my voice, literally and figuratively, continued to elude me.

The Watcher
Cinder block walls feel like home, where we learn our capability to withstand adult decisions. The off white paint covered with beautiful student murals represents much more than dreams and talents. We spend as much time in school, if not more, as our parents do at work. Still, winding up back at my high school as an administrative assistant, the same place I’d been tossed in the trash bin ten years prior as a freshman, somehow made me feel more like garbage at twenty something than it did at fourteen. I still remembered how things worked in high school, and many of the same rules applied, the expectation to do your work and be on time. Only this period of my life I was working with the other side as one of the adults. I hadn’t grown much since high school and frankly I still looked like a kid myself. Somehow, the duty of questioning the tardiness and decision making processes of young people was now my job.

Why We Need An Alliance Between Arts Majors and STEM Majors
We've all heard the stereotypes. Liberal arts majors (encompassing the humanities, social sciences, literature, visual arts, etc.) are impractical and unnecessary, while STEM majors (encompassing science, technology, engineering and math) are smart but boring. We laugh at them, but in doing so, we're ignoring the harm that comes from pitting these two broad groups of study against one another.

A Head For Numbers
I was never a genius - my IQ would fall somewhere between 65 and 100, but people respected and admired me for what they termed my "head for numbers". I admit: even though I remember most things such as my business or telephone numbers, as well as those of others, some are more difficult for me to retain. Still, I was stumped when - according to my mother's prediction - kids my age and my college year were queuing up outside my door to assist them with a mathematical problem. Mathematics was not my favorite subject. Nevertheless, I managed to pass every year with flying colors. In any event, I took up a position as a temp in a prestigious school, teaching...what else? Before I accepted the position, I had to do a little refresher course into the more advanced aspects of mathematics.

Honouring Black Academic Superstars 🙌🏾
As I co-planned Black History Month events at my university in February 2020, I found myself reflecting on the barriers to success for Black students in my immediate environment. The one that stood out to me at the time was financial barriers and their associated opportunities for relief or lack thereof. After perusing the list of financial awards available, I noticed that there was no award specifically for Black students despite there being awards for other identities. Being a Black student who dabbled in activism, I knew that I had to embark on a journey to change this promptly.
