American University

American University is a private and not-for-profit university in Washington D.C. The area of its main campus is 90 acres. American University comprises eight schools and colleges, which include the School of International Service, School of Communication, School of Professional and Extended Studies, College of Arts and Sciences, Kogod School of Business, School of Public Affairs, School of Education, and the Washington College of Law (WCL).

This is a more than a century-old university. It was established on December 5, 1892, in the District of Columbia by an Act of Congress. The university was established primarily because of the efforts of Methodist bishop John Fletcher Hurst, who had the aim to create an institution, which could train further public servants.

George Washington University

This is the university named after the first president of the USA, George Washington. George Washington wanted to establish a university in the central part of the United States. He wrote a letter to the U.S. Congress and some others to favor this idea. Eventually, in 1821, Luther Rice, the Baptist missionary and leading minister, secured funds from James Monroe, John Quincy Adams, John C. Calhoun, and some other benefactors for a college. So, a college named Columbian College was established, which became Columbian University in 1873. In 1904, it was renamed George Washington University.

Today, the university comprises many graduate and undergraduate schools such as the Elliott School of International Affairs, the Columbian College of Arts and Sciences, the School of Media and Public Affairs, the GWU School of Business, the Trachtenberg School of Public Policy, and Public Administration, the GWU Law School and the Corcoran School of the Arts and Design. The main campus of the university is the Foggy Bottom campus, which is located in the heart of Washington D.C. with the Word Bank and the International Monetary Fund on campus. White House and the U.S. Department of State are within blocks of campus.

Numerous research centers and institutes are hosted by George Washington University. The Institute for International Economic Policy and the National Security Archive are the best examples of these institutes. The university also has two satellite campuses – the Virginia Science and Technology Campus in Loudoun County, Virginia, and the Mount Vernon campus in D.C.'s Foxhall neighborhood.

Howard University

Howard University was chartered by the U.S. Congress on March 2, 1867. This university has a 256-acre campus. Many historical landmarks can be found on the campus such as Frederick Douglass Memorial Hall, Andrew Rankin Memorial Chapel, and the Founders Library. You can also find the Howard University Gallery of Art on campus, which was established by Howard's Board of Trustees in 1928.
