Ihram Clothing tips for female pilgrims

Every year, millions of women go on pilgrimage for the holy rituals of hajj and umrah. Even though the rules for Ihram are the same for both men and women, there are also some differences. So, here are a few tips for women pilgrims on how to dress for Ihram.

What type of clothes can be worn as Ihram?

• Unlike men, women can wear clothes that have been sewn for Ihram. Also, female pilgrims don't have to follow a certain dress code. They can wear whatever they want as long as it is modest and simple, which is in line with Islamic teachings. Also, there are no rules about what colour women's Ihram clothes have to be. They can be any colour. Still, many women who are pilgrims like to wear white or black so that they look like the other pilgrims.

• Many female pilgrims choose to wear a "Abaya" out of fear of getting confused about the rules of Ihram clothes.

Face and Hand coverings are prohibited.

In the state of Ihram, female pilgrims are not allowed to wear a veil over their faces or cover their hands (wearing gloves). The rule is still clear from what the Holy Prophet Hazrat Muhammad said (SAWW).

So, during the holy ceremonies, female pilgrims can't wear any kind of niqab, gloves, or other clothing that covers their face or hands.

The fabric of Ihram clothes.

Makah is in a desert, so it is hot and dry there. A cotton-blend or mixed fabric may seem like the best choice for Ihram clothing because it would help you avoid rashes and sunburns. At the same time, though, the fabric is very light. It's best to wear light colours because they help you stay cool in hot weather. Even though thin fabric is better for the weather, it shouldn't show any skin when the sun is out. Because of this, your underwear should be the same colour as your Ihram clothes.

Covering your head is necessary.

During the holy ceremonies, women must keep their heads covered at all times. It is recommended to wear a Hijab with an under-scarf cap because it is easy to put on and take off. Before you go on hajj or umrah, you should learn and practise the basics of how to wear a hijab. This is especially important if you don't know much about how to wear one.

Wearing Jewelry; permissible or not?

Even when they are in the state of Ihram, women can wear ornaments and jewellery. It is said that Umm-al-Mu'minin Hazrat Ayesha (RA) didn't think it was wrong for a Muhrimah (female pilgrim) to wear jewellery while in Ihram.
