HOW TO PLAY SPADES

CARD RULES

By CHARLES EDWARDSPublished 3 years ago • 4 min read

i'm going to teach you how to play

spades spades is a trick taking game

played with four people where you're

trying to score 300 points the person

sitting directly across from you at the

table is your partner you and your

partner want to score 300 points before

the other team does you got it easy so

first you want to clarify the house

rules when you play spades i'll be

playing joker joker do deuce juggle jerk

reduce

today we're actually going to play ace

high which means the ace of spades is

the highest spade in the deck

now the name space comes from the fact

that the suit spades

which is this one

is considered the trump suit

nothing beats a spade except a higher

speed

easy

now there's two other things that you

want to watch out for

talking across the board where to get

you beat up by the opposite team and

reneging which will get you cut by your

partner with actual knife serious

so talking across the board is either

directly or indirectly telling your

partner what cards you have in your hand

it can be a simple ass saying i have the

five of clubs

or i can't beat this

you want to make sure you clarify with

everybody at the table what talking

across the board is

the second thing is reneging we'll get

to that in a second

so now that you got your house rules out

of the way

the dealer

is going to shuffle and pass the cards

to the right for the person to cut

so it's cut to the right deal to the

left after the cut they start dealing to

everybody at the table starting with the

person on the left

now that you've been dealt with 13 cards

you want to separate them into numerical

order and by suit so as you can see i

have my diamonds clubs hearts

and the infants and spades

the thing about the first hand is

when you're playing for points the first

hand bids itself which means each book

that you and your partner get is worth

10 points

so if this first hand me and my partner

get six books we have earned 60 points

so we're going to start with this hand

[Music]

so my partner has played

the ace of diamonds

now the thing about spades is whatever

suit

leads so whatever suit is played first

is a suit that led

that is to suit everybody at the table

must play

so because my partner played the ace of

diamonds

everybody must play a diamond

there is one caveat

if you do not have a diamond they are

free to play wherever else you have in

your hand

typically that's when people start

playing spades to win the book however

if you

have a diamond in your hand and you

don't play it that is called reneging

generally when you renege you owe two to

three books to the opposing team

depending on how you set up the rules in

the beginning

so an example of reneging my partner has

played the ace of diamonds this hand

will play the ten of diamonds

i know the king of diamonds is the next

highest diamond but it's also the only

diamond i have in my hand

so i don't want to play it because i

want to win more books so i'll play

the seven of hearts this hand plays the

four dots

yay we won the book

thank you partner and because my partner

won the book

they get to lead the next hand so they

lead

with another diamond this hand plays the

two of diamonds

and now i play

the king of diamonds i have just reneged

or we as a team owe the other team

two to three books also you can go into

debt

as you see we've only won one book but

we owe them two so the next book we win

i eat this one

we owe to that team

and that puts us at a heavy deficit so

please

unless you want to start an argument get

a drink thrown in your face

get shot at

don't renegade

it keeps everybody safe

now

on the second hand is where you start to

bid your hand

when you bid

you become miss clio and make a

prediction about how many books you're

gonna get on this hand

so one of the easiest ways to bid for

people who are new to spades

if you can count the aces and kings in

your hand

that's roughly a pretty good estimate of

how many books you will get so for this

particular hand we have one

two

three

four books then our partner is gonna do

the same thing with their hand let's say

our partner says three books

so between the two of us we can say

we're going to get seven books

now be careful because there's also 13

books

in the entire hand

so if we say seven and the other team

says six everybody has a book accounted

for

however if we say seven and the other

team says seven

because that's 14

someone is going to get set

when you get set that basically means

you did not get the number of books that

you said you're going to get at the end

of the hand if you got all your books

you add your books times 10 to your

score

if you get set you subtract your books

times 10 to your score so we say 7 we

make our 7 we get 70 points if we get

set and do not make our 7 we subtract 70

points for our score

that is the beginner's version on how to

play spades there will be

more videos in this series to show more

advanced tips and tricks but that should

be enough to get you in trouble

if you like this video make sure you

share with someone else that's trying to

learn how to play spades and we'll see

you next time

how to
