How to Get Started With Digital and Affiliate Marketing
Without Wasting Money on Scammy Courses

When I first heard about people making money online through digital and affiliate marketing, I was curious—but also overwhelmed. It seemed like everyone was selling a course or making vague claims without showing how they actually did it. I didn’t want to waste money on another “secrets to success” PDF that told me to “just be consistent” and left me with more questions than answers.
So I did the one thing that made all the difference: I started where I was, using free tools and real strategy.
If you’re brand new to digital or affiliate marketing and want step-by-step guidance without spending hundreds on someone’s webinar, this article is for you. I’m breaking it all down into real steps you can take to start building digital income—without the fluff.
⸻
What Is Digital Marketing, Really?
Digital marketing is just a fancy way of saying: promoting or selling things online. This could mean selling your own product, promoting someone else’s product for a commission (affiliate marketing), or building a brand that makes money through views, clicks, or content.
You don’t need to be a “marketing expert.” You just need to learn a few basics, and then stay consistent. The beauty of it? Most of this can be done for free or very cheap.
⸻
Step 1: Pick Your Niche
Before anything else, decide who you want to talk to and help. Your niche is your focus. It could be:
• Moms trying to make money from home
• People who want to lose weight on a budget
• DIY candle or t-shirt creators
• Small business owners
• Beauty or skincare lovers
The more focused your niche, the easier it is to grow a loyal audience.
⸻
Step 2: Choose Your Platform
Start with one or two platforms that match your style:
• TikTok (short videos, trending audio)
• Instagram (visuals, stories, reels)
• Pinterest (great for digital products & blogs)
• YouTube (longer content)
• Vocal.Media or a personal blog (written content)
Your platform is where you build trust, grow a following, and share your links.
⸻
Step 3: Choose What to Promote
This is where the money starts coming in.
Option 1: Affiliate Marketing
You promote someone else’s product and earn a commission when someone buys using your link.
• TikTok Shop Affiliate – Create short videos about products people are already searching for.
• Amazon Influencer Program – Share your favorite finds with affiliate links.
• ClickBank, ShareASale, Impact – These are affiliate networks where you can find thousands of products in different niches.
Option 2: Sell a Digital Product
You can create your own product (once!) and sell it over and over again.
Examples:
• A digital planner
• A checklist or guide (ex: “Start Your Small Biz in 7 Steps”)
• Canva templates (social media posts, thank-you cards, etc.)
• A simple eBook (like “How I Grew My TikTok to 10K”)
You don’t have to be an expert—you just need to know a little more than someone else who’s just starting.
⸻
Step 4: Make Content That Helps People
Now that you know your niche and what you’re offering, create content that gives value. Teach, entertain, or inspire. Some examples:
• “3 things I wish I knew before starting my small business”
• “How to make passive income from home”
• “I made $100 selling this digital product—here’s what I used”
At the end of your content, always include a clear call to action:
• “Link in bio for my digital checklist”
• “Use my code for 15% off”
• “DM me ‘START’ and I’ll send you the free guide”
⸻
Step 5: Use Free Tools to Make It Easier
Here’s what helped me:
• ChatGPT – Helps you write product descriptions, video scripts, content ideas, and digital product outlines.
• Canva – For designing pretty planners, templates, and social media content.
• Stan Store / Beacons / Linktree – Put all your links in one spot.
• Gumroad / Payhip / Etsy – Sell your digital products without a website.
⸻
Step 6: Build an Email List (Optional But Powerful)
Social media can disappear tomorrow—but an email list is yours forever. Offer a freebie in exchange for an email:
• “Get my free 5-day content planner”
• “Download the starter checklist I use to run my small biz”
Use a free tool like MailerLite or ConvertKit to manage your list.
⸻
Final Thoughts: You Don’t Need a Course—You Need a Plan
The truth is, you don’t need to be an expert. You just need to start. Use free tools. Create one simple product. Promote one affiliate item. Post helpful content. That’s digital marketing—and it works.
I started from scratch, with no money and no clue, and I’m building a business one post at a time. You can too.
