How Do I Make Him Want Me Back? I Think I Miss Normal More Than Him

I kept searching for ways to get him back. I didn’t realize I was trying to return to an ordinary life that no longer existed.

How Do I Make Him Want Me Back

I found the receipt in the side pocket of my work bag. It was from the diner we used to go to on Sundays. Not the one we liked. The one we settled on because it was close and the coffee was always hot enough. He used to order the same thing every time.

Two eggs over easy, wheat toast, side of bacon. I never asked why he didn't switch it up. I just got used to it. Now I was standing in my kitchen holding this crumpled piece of paper and I couldn't remember the last time I went to that diner alone.

I sat down at the table and smoothed it out. The date was from six months ago. The Sunday before everything got quiet.

I kept it on the counter for three days. I don't know why. I just didn't want to throw it away yet.

The thing about distance is nobody announces it. It just shows up in small ways. You notice you're the one sending the last text more often. You notice the jokes don't land the same. You notice you're explaining things you used to just say. Then one day you're sitting across from someone and you're thinking about who they were six months ago instead of who they are right now.

That's where I was. Not angry. Not even sad most days. Just stuck in this loop of trying to get back to a version of us that I couldn't even name anymore. I didn't want to ask anyone about it. I didn't want to call my sister and hear her say I deserved better. I didn't want better. I wanted familiar.

I started googling things late at night. Not because I believed the internet had answers. Just because I needed to see the question written out. how do i make him want me back. I typed it like that. Lowercase. No punctuation. Like I was whispering it. The search results were all the same. Lists of things to do. Things to not do. Ways to be mysterious. Ways to trigger some psychological response. I read them and felt nothing. Then I read them again.

I saved one article. Something I read when I couldn't stop searching. It wasn't like the others. It didn't tell me what to text him or how to act. It just asked what I was actually trying to get back. I kept it open in a tab for a week. I would close my laptop and it would still be there when I opened it again. I didn't share it with anyone. I didn't follow any of the advice. I just kept rereading the same parts. The parts that said maybe the question was wrong.

I used to open our old chats sometimes. Not to find evidence of anything. Just to remember what it felt like when the responses came fast. When he would send three texts in a row. When I didn't have to think about what tone to use. I would scroll back to random Tuesdays. Nothing special happened on those Tuesdays. That was the point. We were just talking. About groceries. About traffic. About nothing. I would read those nothing conversations and feel something I couldn't explain.

Sometimes I would start typing a message and then forget what I wanted to say. I would stare at the screen and the cursor would blink and I would realize I didn't have a real reason to reach out. I just wanted to be in the middle of a conversation again. Any conversation. The kind where you don't plan what comes next.

How Do I Make Him Want Me Back

I went to a friend's birthday dinner last month. I looked normal. I laughed at the right times. I asked about people's jobs and their vacations. Inside I was replaying a conversation from three weeks ago. The one where I asked if he wanted to get dinner and he said he was pretty busy this week. Pretty busy this week. I kept hearing it in different tones. Casual. Apologetic. Distant. I couldn't decide which one was real.

My phone buzzed during dessert. A notification. I reached for it too fast. I knew it wasn't him. It was never him anymore. But my hand moved before my brain caught up. I put it back in my purse and felt embarrassed even though nobody was watching. I was embarrassed at myself for still reacting like that. For still hoping.

I got tired of my own thoughts. That was the worst part. I would be driving home from work and realize I had been thinking about the same thing for twenty minutes. The same memory. The same question. The same maybe if I had just. I would get angry at myself for not being able to think about something else. Then I would think about why I couldn't think about something else. Another loop.

I cooked the pasta we used to make together last Tuesday. The kind with the jar sauce he liked. I stood in the kitchen and I could almost hear him behind me getting plates from the cabinet. But he wasn't there. I was alone in my apartment making too much food and I ate it for three days because I couldn't stand throwing it away. The sauce tasted different. I don't know if they changed the recipe or if I just couldn't remember what it actually tasted like before.

I sat beside him at a mutual friend's party two weeks ago. We were both invited. I didn't know he was coming. I saw him across the room and my stomach did something I can't describe. Not butterflies. More like recognition. Like seeing a place you used to know well and realizing the furniture got moved around.

We talked for maybe ten minutes. About work. About the weather. About nothing. While we talked I was remembering a different version of him. The one who used to text me pictures of dogs he saw on the street. The one who would put his cold hands on my neck to make me yelp. That person was right in front of me but I couldn't reach him. I was talking to the new version and missing the old one at the same time.

I ignored something a friend sent me. A link. I thought it would be another explanation of men. Another framework. Another trick. Later I opened it. Not because I wanted to fix anything. Just because I was tired of my own thoughts and I needed different words. Something that put words around a thought I couldn't finish. I read it and I didn't feel better. But I felt less alone in not knowing what I wanted. That was something.

I kept reopening old conversations. I know I already said that. But I need to say it again because it happened more than I'm comfortable admitting. I would read the same threads and look for signs I missed. Moments where I should have said something different. Reactions that came too slow or too fast. I was trying to edit a conversation that already happened. Like I could change the past by staring at it long enough.

How Do I Make Him Want Me Back

I heard a song in a coffee shop last Thursday. One we used to listen to on road trips. I didn't cry. I just stood there holding my coffee and I couldn't move for a minute. The barista asked if I was okay. I said I was fine. I was fine. I just got hit by a memory of a feeling I didn't have a name for. Comfort, maybe. Or certainty. The feeling of knowing someone was going to be there when you got home. I don't have that feeling anymore. I have the memory of having it. That's different.

I became aware of how long I had been trying to return to something that was already gone. Not in a dramatic way. Just a quiet realization while I was folding laundry. I was holding one of his old t-shirts I kept. I don't know why I kept it. I don't wear it. I just wash it and fold it and put it back in the drawer. Standing there with that shirt in my hands I thought about how many times I had done this. Washed it. Folded it. Put it away. Waiting for a version of my life that wasn't coming back.

I searched for how to get him back. I wasn't sure whether I wanted him, or the person I used to be around him.
