How Do I Make Him Want Me? I Was Asking the Wrong Question

I kept trying to get his attention back until I stopped recognizing myself.

How Do I Make Him Want Me

He fell asleep before me. That happened most nights. I lay there in the dark listening to him breathe. In. Out. In. Out. I started counting without meaning to. Just something my brain did to stay busy while the rest of me tried not to move too much.

I held my own breath so I wouldn't disturb him. Like my breathing was too loud. Too much. That's how it started. Not with a fight. Not with any words I could point to later. With me lying still in the dark trying to take up less space than I actually needed.

I used to say what I thought. I used to tell him when something bothered me. Then I noticed that when I talked less, he stayed in the room longer. When I acted like nothing was wrong, he sat closer. When I laughed at things I didn't think were funny, he glanced at me. Not really looked. Just glanced. But I took it.

So I started acting like nothing was wrong most of the time. I practiced being easier. I practiced being quieter. I practiced having no needs at the wrong moments. It wasn't a plan. It felt like getting by. Like if I could just find the right version of myself, the one who didn't cause any friction, he would want me again the way he used to.

I got predictable. I knew what he wanted for dinner without asking. I bought the bread he liked even though I preferred the other kind. I left it in the bag on the counter and threw my receipt away before I could look at it and wonder when I had stopped buying the things I liked.

I started explaining myself before he even asked. If I was going out, I gave him every detail so he wouldn't have to wonder. So he wouldn't feel inconvenienced. So he wouldn't have any reason to be annoyed. I answered texts immediately. I was always where I said I would be. I thought if I was never any trouble, he would want to keep me around.

I waited for small things. A question about my day. A hand on my back in the kitchen. A look that lasted more than a second. When he asked one extra thing, like how did it go or did you sleep okay, I felt something loosen in my chest. I would carry that small moment around for days. I would replay it.

I would feel proud of myself, like I had earned it. Then I would feel embarrassed for caring that much. For needing proof that I was still in the room with him.

We still touched. Sometimes. But it felt different. Like he was reaching for something familiar, not for me. I missed how it used to feel but I stopped saying so. I pretended it didn't matter. I told myself I was being too sensitive.

That grown women don't make a big deal about small changes. That I should be grateful for what was still there. Some nights I lay beside him feeling alone while his arm was right there across the sheets. I missed him and he was two inches away. That didn't make sense to me. I thought if I could just be wanted again, the alone feeling would stop.

I couldn't tell if I loved him or if I was just tired of trying to earn his attention. Those felt like the same thing for a long time. I thought love meant working hard to be chosen. I thought the wanting was the proof. When I typed into my phone late at night, how do i make him want me, I wasn't really asking about him.

I was asking what was wrong with me that I needed to search it. I tried how do i make him want me again. I tried why doesn't he want me anymore. I tried how to get his attention back. I saw how to make him desire me in the suggested searches and I clicked it. I read things that told me to be mysterious.

To be busy. To stop being so available. I tried those things. I left messages unread so I wouldn't reply too fast. Then I checked every two minutes to see if he had written back. I pretended to be busier than I was. I pretended not to care. He didn't seem to notice the difference. Or maybe he liked it better. That possibility sat in my stomach like something rotten.

The apartment wasn't loud. Nobody yelled. There were no slammed doors. It was just empty. We moved around each other like we were both trying not to disturb something fragile. I started standing in the bathroom longer than I needed to. Just standing there looking at the wall. I would hear him moving in the other room and I would stay still. I didn't know what I was waiting for. Maybe for the feeling to pass. Maybe for me to remember what I wanted to do with the rest of the evening.

I was in the grocery store holding two boxes of cereal. One was his. One was mine. I stood there for too long. I realized I didn't know which one I actually wanted anymore. I had been buying his for so long that mine looked foreign. Like something a different woman would eat. I put both in the cart. I didn't know if that meant anything or if I was just confused.

I found something when I was exhausted from searching the same questions online. It explained why some women spend years trying to be wanted while slowly disappearing themselves. I didn't expect much from it. I was wrong. It wasn't a miracle. It didn't promise to fix anything. It was just a free guide.

Something about understanding what happens to your own mind when you keep shrinking. I read it late at night while he slept in the other room. It didn't give me steps. It gave me recognition. Like someone had seen what I was doing and didn't call it stupid. If you're somewhere in the middle of this, tired of typing the same searches, tired of wondering how to stop feeling invisible in a relationship, there's a free video that comes with it. It's not going to save your relationship. It might just help you see yourself again. That's all I wanted by that point. Not a fix. Just to see myself.

Things didn't change right away. Nothing flipped. I didn't become stronger. I didn't choose myself. I just got tired. Tired of performing. Tired of checking my own words before they came out. Tired of standing in the bathroom. One morning I bought my cereal again. I didn't make a big deal out of it. I didn't announce it. I just bought it and ate it and didn't think about whether he would care. He didn't notice. That hurt a little and relieved me a little. Both at once.

I started leaving my phone in another room. Not as a strategy. Just because looking at it made me feel sick. I stopped explaining where I was going every time I left the house. Not because I was being bold. I just ran out of energy for the explanations. He asked me once if something was wrong. I said no. That was still a lie. But it was a smaller lie than before. It was a lie I was too tired to maintain fully.

I realized I didn't know what I wanted. Not in the big sense. Not life goals. Just small things. What I wanted for dinner. What show I wanted to watch. Whether I wanted to go to bed early or stay up. I had been adjusting around his preferences for so long that my own had gone quiet. I had to sit with the quiet and wait for something to come back. Sometimes nothing did. Sometimes I just felt blank. That was scarier than the sadness.

Some days I blamed him. I thought he took me for granted. I thought he stopped seeing me because it was easier not to. Some days I blamed myself. I thought I was too much and not enough at the same time. Some days I blamed nobody. I thought maybe this is just what happens. Maybe the wanting always fades and everyone is pretending it doesn't. I didn't know which thought was true. They all felt true on different afternoons.

I still don't know if he wants me. I stopped asking how to make him want me. Not because I got an answer. Just because the question started feeling wrong in my mouth. Like I had been asking the wrong thing for years. Now I ask what I want. Most days I don't have a clear answer. Some days I do. I bought my cereal again last week. I stood in the bathroom for five minutes instead of twenty. I don't know if the relationship will get better. I don't know if he will ever look at me the way I need him to. I know I got tired of disappearing. That's not a happy ending. That's just where I am.
