Google Introduces New Privacy Tools for User Control

New features like "Temporary Chat" and updated data settings empower users to manage their conversations and uploads with Gemini Apps.

MOUNTAIN VIEW – In a significant move to address growing user concerns about data privacy in the age of artificial intelligence, Google has announced a suite of new privacy features for its Gemini Apps. These updates, which are designed to give users greater transparency and control, include a new Temporary Chat mode, refined activity controls, and more explicit settings for managing uploaded files and audio recordings. The changes signal a proactive effort by Google to build trust with its user base and align its AI services with its long-standing privacy principles.

The rapid rise of large language models like Gemini has brought immense utility but also a heightened sense of scrutiny regarding how personal data is collected, stored, and utilized. Users are increasingly concerned about their digital interactions being used to train AI models or create permanent digital footprints. Google’s latest announcement directly tackles these concerns by introducing tools that empower individuals to decide what data is saved and what is discarded.

Introducing Temporary Chats: Conversations Without a Footprint

Perhaps the most notable new feature is Temporary Chat, which is designed for one-off, sensitive, or private conversations. This mode allows users to start a new chat with Gemini that won’t be used to personalize future interactions or train the underlying AI models. Temporary chats are a direct response to the need for a "clean slate" in AI interactions, where a user can ask a private question or brainstorm a sensitive idea without the conversation being saved long-term.

Unlike standard chats, these temporary conversations will not be archived in your recent chat history or in your Gemini Apps Activity. While they are saved for up to 72 hours to allow for seamless conversational flow and for safety and security monitoring, they are then permanently deleted. This feature provides a practical solution for users who need the power of Gemini for quick, non-personal tasks, ensuring that their one-time queries do not become a part of their permanent digital record.

Redefined Activity Controls: "Keep Activity" and Data Handling

Google is also clarifying and updating its data handling practices for uploaded content. The existing "Gemini Apps Activity" setting is being renamed to "Keep Activity", a more transparent name that better reflects its purpose. When this setting is turned on, your past chats are visible in your account, allowing you to resume conversations where you left off.

A significant update under this new setting is how uploaded content is handled. Starting September 2, a "subset of uploads"—including files, videos, screenshares, and photos—will be used to help improve Google services. This allows the models to learn and improve based on a broader range of real-world data. However, Google has made it clear that this is not a mandatory feature. The "Keep Activity" setting can be turned off at any time, and for users who currently have their Gemini Apps Activity setting off, the new "Keep Activity" setting will remain off by default. This ensures that users who have already opted out of data saving will not have their preferences changed without their consent. The ability to manage and delete activity at any time also remains a core part of the user controls.

New Opt-In Controls for Audio and Live Recordings

In a further step toward user autonomy, a new setting for Gemini audio and Gemini Live recordings is being introduced. This is a separate, opt-in control that allows users to decide whether their audio, video, and screenshare recordings—collected when using the microphone or Gemini Live features—are used to improve Google services for everyone.

Crucially, this new setting is off by default, giving users the power to make an explicit choice. The opt-in nature of this control is a key detail, signaling Google’s commitment to not collecting or using this potentially sensitive data without direct user permission. It addresses the unique privacy concerns associated with multimodal AI that processes not just text but also live audio and visual information.

Building on a Foundation of Privacy and Responsible AI

These new features are not isolated changes but are built upon Google’s existing privacy framework and AI principles. As before, any activity used to improve services, including model training, is de-identified. Google uses human reviewers for quality assurance, but it disconnects chats from user accounts before sending them to service providers to protect individual privacy.

The company's commitment extends to building technical data protections that safeguard and ensure the responsible use of data. This includes a strict Generative AI Prohibited Use Policy and detailed information available in the Gemini Apps Privacy Notice and Privacy Hub. The introduction of these new controls puts Gemini's privacy stance in a new light, positioning it as a service that not only offers powerful AI capabilities but also respects and safeguards user data with a high degree of transparency and control. These updates reflect an evolving understanding of user expectations and a broader industry trend toward user-centric privacy by design. By offering a range of settings from temporary, non-saving chats to granular controls over specific data types, Google is aiming to meet the diverse privacy needs of its global user base and foster a more trustworthy relationship with AI.
