From Broke To Rise

5 Valuable Lessons I Learned in Facing Business Failure

By Tauhid HidayatPublished about a year ago • 2 min read

A few years ago, my life came crashing down. Not just crashing… but completely bankrupt—financially, mentally, and self-respect-wise. I lost a business I was proud of, I was in debt, I lost the friends I used to have when I was “in the game,” and most of all—I lost my self-confidence. It felt like all the doors were closing at once, and I was standing in the rain with no roof over my head. But today, I’m not writing this to grieve. I’m writing this because I’ve risen-and I want to share 5 life lessons I learned from that low point.

1. Life Can Knock Us Down, But We Can Still Choose to Get Up

When everything was falling apart, I felt like a victim. The world wasn’t fair, people didn’t care, and I wanted to blame anyone but myself. But then I realized: blaming doesn’t change anything. The day I started to change was the day I asked myself:

“If this is all my fault, then I can be the solution.”

I slowly started to get up, not by a miracle, but by small decisions every day to keep moving.

2. Money Can Be Lost, But Skill & Integrity Never Betray

When I ran out of money, I felt like a nobody.

But then I realized: I still had two things I could rely on—my abilities and who I am. I started from the bottom again: helping small businesses, doing odd jobs, even freelancing for minimal pay. But I did it wholeheartedly. And from there small opportunities began to emerge.

Slowly I learned one thing:

“ If you're serious about building value, the world will start to take notice.”

3. True Friends Are Not Many, But Always There

When I “had it,” I was surrounded by people. But when I fell, only a few really stayed. It's painful, but it's also filtering.

From there I learned: “It is better to have three people who are truly sincere, than thirty who only show up for parties.”

Now I value deep relationships more than just loud ones.

4. Getting Back on Track Takes Time - And It's Okay to Be Slow

I wanted to get better soon. But reality isn’t like the movies. There’s no motivational music montage that makes everything better in 2 minutes. Getting back on track is a process—sometimes moving forward, sometimes moving backward. But I learned one golden rule:

“ Don't stop moving, even if it's just one small step a day.”

Dark nights will come. But morning always follows.

5. Life Doesn't Give Us What We Want—It Gives Us What We Need to Grow

If I hadn't gone bankrupt, I might never have learned humility, empathy, or the importance of perseverance. I probably would never have known that I could be this strong. Turns out, falling is part of the formation. And today, I can say :

“ I am more grateful for my failures than my past successes.”

Because that's where I really learned to be human

Closing.

Bankruptcy is not the end. If you’re at a low point right now—trust me, it’s not your home. It’s just a stopover to find a stronger version of yourself. And when you do get out, you'll see the world with different eyes. Wiser. Stronger. More alive. If I can get up, so can you
