Freshman Year

High School

By Nicole StarkPublished 7 years ago 2 min read

Freshman year always has its ups and downs. Here are some things that I wish I knew before my freshman year of high school.

Get involved in a lot of things.

This is your chance to try everything out. It's your chance to shine. If you don't try everything at least once you may never know what you missed out on. Once graduation day comes, you will be wishing you could go back and try the things you wish you had tried. Don't feel like you shouldn't try something because it "might" not be for you. Try it out anyway and if it's not for you then you always have the option to not do it anymore. You are going to regret the things you didn't do.

Choose your friends wisely.

The people who you hang out with have a great impact on your life. So be careful who you hang out with.

Don't do anything you are not comfortable with.

This also goes along with choosing your friends wisely, because people will try to get you to do things that you may not be comfortable with. So please be careful and you always have the option to say NO. Who cares if people won't accept you as their friend anymore. Because ten times out of ten, if they do that, then they are most likely not your friend to begin with.

Get a job.

Get a job as soon as you can. It is a great way to learn responsibilities at such a young age. You will also earn some money so that you can go out and buy that dress you have been wanting to get for a couple of months, or maybe go out to the movies with your friends. But don't forget to save, in just short four years you will have a really big responsibility you will have to pay for — and that is college.

Grades are important.

If you don't work hard and get good grades, you might not be able to graduate high school and will end up at a job working long shifts at your local McDonald's. Good grades can earn you a lot of scholarship money for college. So study hard.

BE YOURSELF!

Don't worry about what other people think of you, you are there to get an education and to move on to bigger and better things. Don't spend an extra 30 minutes in the bathroom doing your makeup, because honestly, no one cares. If you want to wear baggy clothes like sweatpants and a big hoodie, then rock what you have! There is absolute no shame in it. Don't try to change your personality just to fit in with a group of people. No one likes a fake person, so just be yourself.

Boys are overrated.

There is plenty of time, so don't think you need a boyfriend in high school. If you get a boyfriend and everything is great, that's great! I am happy for you. But if you never get a boyfriend in high school, don't worry about it. There is still plenty of time.

Good job. These tips are really good. I think a high school guidance counselor could use this article.
