Controversy over the "super national treatment" of foreign students

Foreign Students

International Students

There is a video on Youtube, which was made by a foreign student after interviewing 6 Chinese and 6 foreign students from two universities in Lanzhou and Beijing.

In her video, at least 4 people live in one dormitory in China, while her foreign student's dormitory is a single room with 2 people at most. In the dormitory for domestic students, people on one floor have to share a common toilet; however, her international student dormitory not only has a private bathroom but even has a bright and spacious kitchen. While domestic students have to stuff their clothes under their beds to make room for studying, international students complain that their mindsets are not big enough.

The huge difference in accommodation treatment like this is only one of the small points in the gap between international students and domestic students, which is just a common phenomenon in China and almost all universities.

Likewise, the conditions of admission, scholarships, tolerance of foreign students, etc. are all beyond the reach of domestic students, which is the so-called super national treatment.

Foreign students can enter the university for free, they can also be exempted from exams, everyone can get high scholarships, they can live well (air conditioning, refrigerators, showers, private bathrooms, etc.), they can play well, and they can hit on Chinese girls at will (easy girl problem will be highlighted in another article), they can miss classes and fail classes at will, and disrupt the normal order of the university, compared with domestic students who have been studying for ten years to enter the university, and a college of In contrast to domestic students who spend ten years in college, hundreds of students compete for only a few scholarships, live in six- or eight-person dormitories, and study hard to not fail, it is too leisurely, even for black people, who are also so confident in the country.

International Students

Dean Hu Billing of Beihang University also said "The scholarship for African students is only 100,000 a year, which is not much." Because their accommodation in Zhu Kezhen Education Building is very high, the scholarship just offsets the accommodation fee.

The internet also exploded with many events that made the crowd of gourmets clamor, such as Tsinghua University's undergraduate admissions for international students announced in 2017, which completely abolished written exams and required no exams, as long as they submitted application materials, interviews, and then waited for the audit to be approved. In addition, there is an even more exaggerated rule: all foreign candidates applying to Tsinghua University can apply for Chinese government scholarships; foreign students who are already studying in high school in Beijing can apply for scholarships directly to Tsinghua University.

Shandong University's "Study Buddy" program is a hot network or broken glasses, which was implemented in 2016 and started to match international students with one-to-one study buddies in 2017; in 2018, the system was upgraded to one-to-three, that is, one international student with three study buddies. There is an online application form for finding a study partner at Shandong University, with detailed categories ranging from major, gender, and personality to the purpose of dating (e.g., to make friends with foreigners of the opposite sex) and a questionnaire that says "... to match you with a study partner of your choice."

There is countless similar news, such as the issue of different treatment of swimming pools in a university campus in Beijing, the issue of a university requiring air conditioning but giving priority to international students' apartments, the issue of international students gathering to smoke marijuana in a university and the university mishandling it, etc.

How many international students are there in China? What kind of foreign students are there in domestic universities? Why do domestic universities recruit these international students and why do they give them preferential treatment?

There are currently 490,000 students from 196 countries and regions in 2019, of which only about 85,000 are masters and PhDs by education, and the rest are undergraduate degrees.

Among them, 295,000 are Asian students, 81,000 are African students, 74,000 are European students, and about 40,000 are American and Oceanian students.

If you count by country, South Korea has the most, with more than 50,000, Thailand 28,000, Pakistan 28,000, India 23,000, the United States 20,000, Russia 19,000, and in the top ten are Indonesia, Laos, Japan, Kazakhstan, and Vietnam, France, Bangladesh, Mongolia, and Malaysia, all with more than 10,000.

From the perspective of scholarship, there are Chinese government scholarship students, about 63,000 of them, and the rest are self-financing. As for the subsidy, it varies from school to school, and there are more subsidies for master and doctoral students, and less for undergraduate students, although it is not so exaggerated in terms of subsidy, and the total amount of subsidy is equal to the cost of international students in China, but the subsidy is more than domestic students is certain.

In addition to the treatment of domestic students, the negative feelings of domestic students are divided into different countries, mainly among Pakistani, African, European, and American students. For example, the problem of randomly hitting on and harassing domestic female students, the problem of very poor grades, the problem of very poor quality, etc.

These problems do exist, but can not be generalized, and most of the domestic students, good college students are nestled in the dormitory, classroom learning it, usually invisible, and there is always a part of the poor quality of students outside but on behalf of these international students. As for the problem of good or bad grades, I believe the students of language universities can explain this problem very well, especially Beijing Language and Culture University has more than 9000 foreign students, and most of the students here still have very good student grades.

For some foreign students from Pakistan, Africa, Europe, and the United States, only part of them have the quality of "foreign trash", this is the case everywhere, such as Zhejiang University's Nu Moumou, who is not a good person, like this Chinese students are not one or two, Zhejiang University on probation and drug addiction it.

Domestic universities have four reasons for recruiting these international students

First, at the school level, it is for the honor of the school. In the evaluation of the world universities, the number of international students is one of the evaluation criteria, and the university administrators want to improve their ranking on QS World University Ranking, THE World Ranking, and USNews Global University Ranking, they must widely attract foreign students, and what to attract foreign students, by ranking? Ranking of Tsinghua 45th, Peking University 57th, Zhejiang University 67th, not to mention other 985, 211, and even secondary schools, can only rely on scholarships, treatment, and subsidies, just like the current university recruiting national college entrance examination top students, the school also hope to recruit better students, not to mention from abroad to enroll.

Secondly, at the national level, let the world understand China. The years of international students in China are the years to understand China, and the understanding of international students in China strengthens the understanding of this country to China. Only through better mutual understanding can we have better cooperation in the future.

Thirdly, talent level, attracting talents, there are a large number of companies and enterprises in China and abroad that need foreign talent, there is a big gap, and it is very difficult to recruit talent from abroad, but if they are foreign students, the probability of staying is relatively high, even if they return to their own country, they can enter Chinese enterprises, even if they do not enter Chinese companies, for example, a German student who has studied in our country, after University training, after returning to Germany in a company to do a certain position, when this company has the choice of cooperation, as training students in China will gain certain advantages, of course, this is a bit far away.

Fourth, the economic level Like domestic students studying abroad, many international students are self-funded, China has 660,000 international students abroad, and more than half of them are self-funded, and the consumption of this part of the students is very large, likewise, the consumption of international students in our country at home will also promote the domestic economy.

Of course, many people question whether the world ranking of this school is that important, is there no other way to attract good international students to come, this differentiation, it can not be denied that some schools are indeed in the view of foreign flattery, so many countries in the world, but also so many international students, look at the Chinese international students in Germany, in the United States and other countries, work-study, no differentiation has been Instead, there is some discrimination in many places, and foreign students in China seem to be superior, this perception is the school needs to change, not because of this ranking and bend the backbone.

I just hope that these universities in China will not do more things that make the nation fall and feel ashamed.
