BILL OF RIGHTS

(A pillar of American democracy)

The Bill of Rights upholds fundamental freedoms and safeguards that are vital to the country's identity. The United States Constitution's first ten amendments, known as the bill of rights, preserve the separation of powers between the state and its people and protect individual liberties from government interference.

The bill of rights' clauses have had a significant impact on American history, forming the legal system and acting as a symbol of justice and freedom.

The ratification of the United States Constitution in 1787 is where the bill of rights got its start. Many believed that the Constitution did not sufficiently protect individual liberties, even though it set down the composition and authorities of the federal government.

A number of Constitutional amendments were authorized by Congress in 1789 and later ratified by the states. The purpose of these modifications, which are generally referred to as the bill of rights, was to allay the anti-federalists concerns and guarantee that the new government upheld the rights of its people.

The first 10 amendments to the US Constitution, which were approved on December 15, 1791, are known as the Bill of Rights. In order to protect individual liberties and prevent possible abuses of power by the federal government, these amendments were inserted to the Constitution.

Amendments -1: Defends the rights to petition, press, assembly, speech, and religion. It guarantees people's freedoms of expression, religious practice, peaceful assembly, and petitioning the government for redress of grievances.

Amendment -2 : Protects the freedom to carry and keep weapons. The extent of a person's right to own and carry a firearm has been hotly debated in relation to this amendment.

Amendment -3: Prevents soldiers from being quartered in private residences during peacetime without the owner's permission. The complaints from the colonial era about the British practice of putting troops in private homes under duress are reflected in this amendment.

Amendment – 4: Shields against irrational seizures and searches. It mandates that warrants be granted only in the event of probable cause and that they contain a detailed description of the location to be searched as well as the people or items to be seized.

Amendment - 5: Provides a number of safeguards for those who are charged with crimes. Due process of law protections, immunity from double jeopardy (being tried for the same crime twice), the right to stay silent in the face of self-incrimination, and assurances of appropriate recompense for private property acquired for public use (eminent domain) are all included.

Amendment -6 : Protects criminal defendants' rights, such as the right to a prompt and public trial, the right to an unbiased jury trial, the ability to cross-examine witnesses, and the right to legal representation.

Amendments – 7: Provides a guarantee of the right to a jury trial in some civil situations if the sum in dispute is more than $20.

Amendment -8: Outlaws exorbitant fines, excessive bail, and unusually harsh penalties. It guarantees that criminal penalties are fair and compassionate.

Amendment -9: States that the enumeration of some rights in the Constitution should not be interpreted as negating or demeaning other rights that the people may have. It basically highlights the fact that people have rights that go beyond those that are stated in the Constitution.

Amendment - 10: Reserves to the states or the people all powers not specifically granted to the federal government. It restricts the reach of federal power and upholds the federalism principle.

Bill of Rights ensures that the government remains accountable to its citizens and that the rights & dignity of individuals are respected .
