Many people may not realize it, but fiction books have several positive impacts on our lives. Not only do they allow us to temporarily escape the stresses and problems of reality, they also help us learn new things, enhance creativity, build empathy, and improve social skills. Here are five ways fiction books improve our lives in both short-term and long-term ways.

1) They Help Us Empathize With Others

There are many benefits to reading fiction books, but one of the most underrated is how they help us empathize with others. Readers can learn about other cultures and lifestyles, or think about situations that are different from their own. This helps readers develop compassion for others and be more understanding of them. - They Stimulate Brain Development: Reading fiction books activates the parts of our brain responsible for creative thinking, empathy, and emotions.

- They Improve Concentration: Reading a page or two of your favorite novel before you go to sleep will increase your focus on what you do during the day, as well as make it easier to get up in the morning.

- They Have Antidepressant Properties: Studies have found that people who read novels had a decrease in negative thoughts after finishing them - this has been attributed to an increase in serotonin levels when we read emotionally charged material.

2) They Can Take Us Out of Our Comfort Zones

Fiction books are meant to take us out of our comfort zones. When we read a novel, we're often reading about someone else's life and problems. This can show us that not everyone has it easy and that there are people who have it worse than we do. We might not be able to relate to all of the events in the story but it helps remind us that there is more than what is going on in our lives, which can be comforting in some ways. -Fiction books help us get over our inhibitions: Some of the characters in fiction novels go through things that many of us will never experience. But by reading these stories, we become less inhibited ourselves because we know that something like this could happen at any time. -It builds empathy: Reading about other peoples' hardships or struggles allows us to understand them better and grow closer as friends/family members/etc. It also makes difficult decisions easier because you can see where others are coming from and understand their situation better. -They make us feel more hopeful: Sometimes when reading a sad book, it makes you realize that even if things are bad now they don't always have to stay this way or maybe everything will work out for the better.

3) They Help Us Relax and De-Stress

Fiction books are a great way to relax and de-stress. We all know the feeling when you have a long day at work and you're so tired, but your brain won't stop working. Give yourself permission to read for an hour or two to clear your mind and make sure you can be fully present with loved ones later on in the evening. One study found that those who read fiction before bed had reduced stress levels than those who didn't. It may sound strange, but reading fiction actually provides our brains with a sense of mastery over what we just learned while reading. It makes sense; we use our imagination when reading, which is something many people don't do in their daily lives as they go through their days surrounded by screens and other distractions. When we immerse ourselves into the story of someone else's life it gives us a perspective of how they would handle a certain situation even if it is not exactly like ours.

They Help Us Connect With Other People: Sometimes having deep conversations about what really matters to us is hard--especially if our close friends are not always around because of busy schedules and work obligations. Reading fiction novels allows us to dive deeper into another person's world.

4) They Boost Our Brainpower

Fiction books are a great way to exercise your brain. They stimulate our brains by challenging us to think and use different sides of our brains. Plus, the more we read, the better we get at reading! The benefits of reading fiction books can range from boosting your brainpower to improving empathy and perspective-taking skills. It’s important for children to be able to understand other people’s perspectives because it helps them become a more empathetic person. But adults can benefit from it as well! Reading stories that don’t mirror one’s own life is important for developing cognitive abilities, problem solving skills and leadership skills.

5) They Can Help Us Heal

Fiction books can help us heal by providing a safe space to explore difficult issues without the risk of real-life consequences. We can also use them as a form of escapism during difficult times. They allow us to reflect on our own lives and see how the world could be if we made different choices. In some cases, they offer explanations for things that might otherwise seem unexplainable. For example, in Elena Ferrante's novel, The Story of a New Name (volume two in her Neopolitan series), she explains why Lila moves to Naples with her mother: She went because she didn't want me to go through what I had gone through in her life.
