Top 5 Things You Should Know Before Getting An Education Major

There are so many different types of fields that you can major in. Some fields aren’t too popular, while others will be booming for some time then die out, and then there are some that are always needed and are consistent. One of the most consistent jobs out there is teaching—regardless of the economy people need teachers. Without teachers, you would never be able to get a quality education. If you are wanting to become one of these influential teachers, you will need an education. There are a few things that you should know if you are looking to pursue an education degree.

Personality Is Really Important

As an education major, you are going to spend a lot of time working with a lot of different personalities. Children are just starting to figure out who they are and develop their own personality. When you are teaching you want to have a personality that everyone enjoys. You will want to be kind and welcoming so that your students feel like they can talk to you.

Your Certifications Are Important

The education system is constantly changing. The way children learn and succeed is constantly being researched; that means there are always new certifications and classes you need to do. You may think that once you get your degree you don’t have to keep taking classes, this isn’t the case at all. There are loads of certifications you can and should get; one of the most popular ones is the TESOL certification. These certifications will help you to get better, higher paying jobs.

You Will Get Better Over Time

Very few people go into a job and are phenomenal from the first day. Just like anything else, as you continue to do it, you will get better at it. You will learn how to talk to your students better and what tactics work for teaching certain types of student. Everyone is different, so they will all require different teaching styles, your job as a teacher is to figure out how to help them learn effectively.

You Will Have A Long-Term Effect On Many People

When a child is in school, they will see their teacher probably more than they see their actual parents. This means that you will have a large impact on their life. So, depending on how you treat and talk to your students will determine how they feel about you and how they will remember you for years to come. A lot of people remember quite a few of their teachers, no matter how old they get.

You May Disagree With Some Of Your Coworkers

Just like any type of job, you aren’t going to agree with everything your coworkers do or say. They may have one teaching style that they rave about while you may think it is not the most effective way to teach. If you are a new teacher, you may run into them forming cliques. Some of the teachers you are now working with may be teachers that were there when you were in school. If that is the case, they may be super kind and welcoming or they may feel resentful and try to push you to the outside. You will just have to suck it up and remember that the only people that you have to worry about are your students. Most of the time when they begin to see you are doing a good job, they will begin to warm up to you.
