For 6 seasons spanning almost 9 years, audiences have been enamored by the many exploits of the Shelby family. Last night however, the series concluded its run following a highly anticipated latest season.
While fans may have been disappointed by the news of the series’ conclusion, they have been equally pleased by the news that TV’s most popular family of gangsters will soon be making their way to the big screen.
Show-runner Steven Knight has confirmed that the story of the Shelby family will reach its definitive end not with another season but with a full length movie. With the series now ended, here are 5 things we could see happening in the film.
Disclaimer: If you have yet to finish the series, you’d best turn back now because there will be massive spoilers.
5. Gina Gray and Jack Nelson will serve as the main villains
For those who have watched the season finale, many found Gina Gray’s presence minimal and Jack Nelson completely absent from the episode. More likely than not, this was an intentional omission on the part of the show’s creators in order to set them up as the villains of the movie.
With uncle and niece now having a motive to go up against Tommy and the rest of the Shelby’s there won’t be any need for a new antagonist. Gina will be looking for revenge for her husband Michael’s death and Uncle Jack is going to want to get even for losing out on the opium he was promised.
After all, it wouldn’t have been to have wrapped up so many loose ends in just a 7 episode season. With such bitter revenge brewing, perhaps a movie would be the best stage for all these issues to be conclusively settled.
4. Arthur Shelby and a possible suicide attempt
In the closing minutes of the show, Tommy bids a final farewell to his family without disclosing where he was going or the fact that he was diagnosed with terminal tuberculoma. His elder brother Arthur, the only one who knows of the diagnosis is not present but instead leaves a cryptic letter.
Read by his wife Linda, Arthur tells Tommy that he will join him soon, alluding to dying alongside his brother. However, when Tommy realizes that he is in fact not dying and that the diagnosis was a ruse to make him kill himself, Arthur is not informed of this nor is there any further mention of him as the show ends.
It is interesting to see what happens to Arthur in the movie and how his relationship with Tommy has changed upon realizing that his brother is alive and well. Personally, I feel like Arthur may have attempted suicide but either failed to kill himself or was stopped at the last minute and now resents Tommy for not telling him about the fake diagnosis. It would be a nice subplot to see Tommy attempt to make amends with his elder brother.
3. Alfie Solomons will play a major role
You can’t have a movie about the Peaky Blinders without featuring Tom Hardy, arguably the biggest movie star among the show’s cast. His portrayal of the outspoken Jewish gangster Alfie Solomons has made him one of the show’s most popular characters.
Alfie has come back from the very brink of death in the past and there is no reason to not include him in the upcoming film. After all, it was revealed at the end of season 6 that Alfie had re-risen to prominence as the head of the East Boston Jews in America.
By including Alfie in the movie, we can get a greater look into the success of Tommy Shelby’s best frenemy and even give the cast a reason to take their business further into America if needed.
2. There will be a traitor in the Shelby family
Over the last two seasons, youngest Shelby brother Finn has often drawn the ire of his family due to his lack of ability and untrustworthiness. At the end of season 6, Finn’s loyalty was put to the test and he failed spectacularly.
Now bitter at his exclusion from the family business, it is likely that Finn will want his revenge, particularly against new addition Duke Shelby. Never one to lead his own charge, it is more likely that he will be used by the true antagonists of the film.
More likely than not, Finn will eventually be forced to side once more with his family and grow to accept a lesser role among the Shelby’s. That being said, they could go in a complete opposite direction and turn him into a formidable antagonist on his own merits.
1. The rise of a new generation
With Tommy Shelby finally moving past his grueling workload and Arthur possibly being out of the picture too, it seems that a new generation of the Shelby family will soon rise to the forefront.
With Tommy’s illegitimate son introduced only in the middle of the final season, it is likely that the movie will explore his origins deeper and cover his ascendancy to the top of the Shelby family. Parallels have also begun to be drawn between other existing characters and early fan favorites.
Ada Shelby seems to be set up as being the next Polly Gray, an advisor to her nephew Duke who is Tommy’s successor. At the same time, Jeremiah Jesus has taken charge of the Peaky Blinders gang and conducts himself in a similar way to how Arthur was early on in the series.
While this new generation has yet to find its feet, it can still rely on some predecessors to guide them along the way. At the end of the day, it is likely that a big theme of the Peaky Blinders movie will be about passing the torch from one generation to the next.
That does it for this list. If you made it this far, thank you for taking the time to read this! As a fan of the series, I am definitely looking forward to seeing how the story ends on the big screen.
I’d also love to hear your thoughts on how you see the movie panning out. Until then, take care!
