1) Find a friend to do it with you
Starting a ketogenic diet can be an intimidating and overwhelming task. But it doesn't have to be! One of the best tips for beginning a keto diet is to find a friend to do it with you. Having a partner in crime will not only make the journey more fun, but also help keep you accountable.
With a partner, you can discuss your progress, recipes and ideas, motivation and goals. This makes it easier to stay motivated and stick with the plan. Having a buddy also allows you to compare notes and get new ideas on how to stay on track, there are several ways to find a friend for your keto journey.
You can look for someone who is already on a ketogenic diet, join online forums or Facebook groups, or even reach out to friends and family. If you have a friend who is willing to start the diet with you, that's even better. Having someone who is starting the same diet as you at the same time will be beneficial. You can keep each other motivated and encourage each other on the way.
2) Clean out your pantry and fridge
At the end of the day, having someone to do this journey with you is key to success. It can be hard to stay focused and stay motivated, so finding someone to do it with you is a great way to keep going. Additionally, it’s important to have support from those around you, such as family and friends. Explain your diet plans to them and ask them to be understanding when they invite you over for dinner or when they go out to eat. In addition to having a partner, seek out resources like cookbooks and websites dedicated to the ketogenic lifestyle. These resources can provide inspiration and guidance when trying to come up with new recipes and ideas.
It’s helpful to follow people who post their meal preps and share their stories. Seeing others post their successes can remind us why we started our journey in the first place. Keeping a food journal can also be very helpful on the keto diet. A food journal helps keep track of what meals were eaten, what types of foods were consumed, and any potential side effects from eating certain meals.
It’s important to remember that everybody’s body responds differently to different foods and diets.
3) Meal prep
Meal prepping is an essential step for anyone starting a keto diet. Meal prepping allows you to plan out your meals ahead of time, meaning you don't have to worry about what to make when hunger strikes. It also makes sure that you are getting enough of the right foods in your diet.
When meal prepping, it's important to make sure you are including all the necessary macronutrients in your diet – protein, fat, and carbohydrates. You'll want to focus on foods that are high in fat and low in carbohydrates, such as avocados, nuts and seeds, coconut oil, olive oil, eggs, and fatty fish.
In addition to making sure you're getting enough of the right foods, meal prepping also helps save time and energy in the kitchen. Making large batches of food ahead of time will help you stay on track with your diet and save you time throughout the week.
4) Get rid of temptations
When it comes to sticking to a keto diet, one of the most important things you can do is get rid of temptations. Many people have a hard time resisting those delicious treats, but if they’re not in your home or at work, you’ll be less likely to give into temptation. Start by getting rid of all the processed foods and snacks in your pantry and refrigerator. If you still have candy bars or other sweet treats, it’s best to donate them to a food bank or even throw them away.
Next, make sure that you don’t keep trigger foods like chips or ice cream in your house. You might also want to ask family members or roommates to keep these foods out of your shared space, or better yet, only keep low-carb snacks around. You can also ask family members to support your dietary changes and make sure that no one brings in unhealthy snacks when you’re trying to stay on track.
Instead of reaching for a bag of chips or a candy bar, opt for some sugar-free gum or a cup of tea with stevia instead. The trick is to find an alternative that satisfies your craving without causing you to derail your diet.
5) Have a plan
Having a plan in place when it comes to following the ketogenic diet is key to your success. It is important to know what your daily macros will be and to have meals planned out ahead of time. This will help you stay on track and avoid making poor decisions that could hinder your progress. Start by writing down all of your daily macros, then come up with a meal plan for each day. Make sure to include snacks in your plan as well, so you can prevent yourself from getting too hungry throughout the day. Additionally, make sure to include some cheat meals here and there, as this will allow you to stay motivated and reward yourself for sticking to the diet.
