In the 17th century, Antonio Latini, an Italian chef, recorded the first official ice cream recipe. This recipe included fruits, ice, sugar, and milk, and it is considered the earliest known official ice cream recipe. It laid the foundation for the development of various ice cream flavors and techniques.

Italy further perfected its version of sorbet, known as "gelato," which means "frozen" in Italian. Gelato is known for its rich and intense flavor, as well as its creamy texture. It contains less fat and air compared to traditional ice cream, making it denser and more flavorful. The French, on the other hand, developed their own frozen dessert known as "fromage." In 1905, an 11-year-old boy named Frank Epperson accidentally discovered popsicles when he left a mixture of sugary soda powder and water outside overnight. The mixture froze, and he enjoyed licking it off a wooden stick. This inspired him to start producing and selling these frozen treats, which he initially called "Epsicles" but later renamed "popsicles."

Ice cream cones were invented around the same time as popsicles. In 1904, an ice cream vendor at a fair ran out of dishes, and a neighboring vendor selling waffle-like pastries offered to roll his pastries into cones to hold the ice cream. This led to the birth of the iconic ice cream cone.

Newer frozen treats continue to be invented to this day. In the late 1950s, Omar Knedlik, a Dairy Queen employee in Kansas City, created the Slurpee. When the soda fountain broke down, he stored the beverages in the freezer, resulting in a slushy texture. This inspired him to develop a machine that could produce frozen beverages, leading to the creation of the Slurpee.

Another recent invention is Dippin' Dots, which originated in 1988. A microbiologist was experimenting with freezing cow feed and realized that the same technique could be applied to ice cream. Dippin' Dots are small, frozen beads of ice cream that have gained popularity for their unique texture and presentation.
