Ciao, miei bellissimi amici!

Hello, my beautiful friends! Learning to speak another language in 30 days seems hard, but it is certainly possible when done correctly and when you fully immerse yourself in another language.

A few years back when I lived in Italy, I struggled a lot with the native language as it was enchanting yet perplexing. Every conversation was a puzzle I couldn't solve. But I was determined.

I decided to embrace the challenge of learning Italian in just 30 days. It seemed like a mountain too high to climb, but my passion for the language and culture fueled me. I dove headfirst into the Italian way of life, making mistakes, and getting lost in translation, but slowly, the words started to make sense. I began picking up phrases and understanding dialogues, and eventually, I could express myself with the same ease as the locals.

I believe if I could do it, so can you! So, I will share with you my top 12 tips for mastering a new language in just 30 days… Even if you are absolutely brand new to the language.

1. Focus on Useful Phrases

Let’s face it, being completely fluent in another language in only 30 days isn’t realistic. Define what you want to achieve in 30 days. Be specific about your language skills target (e.g., basic conversation, travel phrases, food/restaurant phrases, etc.)

Learn phrases and vocabulary that are most likely to be used in everyday conversations when starting.

2. Practice Speaking

Start by talking to people. Talk to the locals. If you can’t talk to people using your target language, there are so many amazing apps to try such as Italkior Tandem. These apps can help you become more fluent over time and you can get a TON of practice every day.

3. Find a Language Partner

Find a partner to practice with every day–preferably one who is native to the language. If that’s not possible, find a language partner on an app like Tandemto practice with every day exchanging conversations.

4. Practice Vocabulary

Learning basic vocabulary and building yourself up will help to increase your confidence when learning a language. You can make your flashcards, or you can use an app like Anki Proto create super fun and creative flashcards to make learning and recollection easier. You can also make a vocabulary notebook to document all the words and phrases you learn every day.

5. Practice Reading and Grammar

Start with children’s stories to learn simple language and context. Read through and pay attention to grammar. Also, get a beginner’s textbook to help you learn basic grammar.

6. Listen to Podcasts and YouTube videos

Choose podcasts in your target language that match your interests and level. There are also many educational YouTube channels dedicated to language learning.

7. Watch TV Shows and Movies

Along with reading and watching videos, it’s also important to fully immerse yourself in the language by watching TV shows and movies. You are training your ears to pick up on new sounds when you watch videos in your target language. Even when you're watching shows with captions on, you’re still picking up on how the language is spoken.

8. Change Your Language Settings

Whether you change your language settings on your social media or any of your daily apps, this can help challenge you to train your brain to see new and familiar words and phrases every day. Even if you don’t understand the words or the context, you’re still training your brain to understand how the language is read.

9. Label Your Environment

Put labels on objects around you in the new language. Along with making flashcards, this can help you retain words and simple objects faster especially when you label items in your house.

10. Record Yourself Speaking

Listen to how native speakers talk in conversations. Record yourself often on your phone listening to how you speak and compare it to a native speaker. Recording helps you monitor your progress and it can improve your pronunciation over time.

11. Travel or Virtual Immersion

If possible, travel to a country where the language is spoken or simulate an immersive environment at home. Being more connected to a culture can help enhance language skills and it can certainly help you become fluent.

12. Practice Daily

Last but not least, practice every day and make small goals for yourself. Make a goal to have at least one conversation with a partner (or virtual partner), and learn at least 10 more words every day.

There you have it! 12 tips to help you learn a new language in just 30 days. I would recommend implementing all of these tips into your language-learning journey. Speak and read the language every day, and challenge yourself by watching shows, listening to music, or changing your daily habits to incorporate the new language.

Arrivederci amici, e buona fortuna!
