The pen IS mightier than the sword.

The headline news on this day was a wake-up call from the IPCC to all human inhabitants of this planet that we are on a slippery slope to disaster. In what form will this disaster take? Rising oceans, scorching temperatures making some areas of the planet unliveable, greater and more frequent storms, extensive flooding, droughts, disappearing glaciers causing disappearing potable water in various parts of the world, or all of the above.

As anyone knows who has read my posts, I have three grandchildren. They are three and a half, two and a half, and four months. What is their world going to be like in twenty years if we continue down this road? I shudder to think if we continue pouring greenhouse gases into the atmosphere.

Currently, we, the inhabitants of this planet are using up the earth's resources at an unsustainable rate. Think of the earth's resources as a line of credit account. If we keep debiting more from the account than we are crediting back into it, eventually we are going to run out of money. Simple mathematics. We are not planning for the future nor are we thinking of future generations. We are simply being selfish. Or is it plain old greed? Or perhaps, stupidity?

I live in beautiful British Columbia, a province in Canada with a so-called environmentally friendly government. This "green" government subsidizes the oil industry to the tune of $1.0 billion a year. It permits the logging ("harvesting" is the nice word they use) of what remains of the province's old-growth forests. It encourages fracking with the resulting degradation of groundwater. It has permitted the building of a giant LNG plant, even though there is a glut in the world market and LNG generates generous amounts of global warming gas. And there lies the problem. If local, state, and provincial governments are not prepared to step up and lead the way, what are our prospects for bailing out this sinking ship?

Most humans on the planet are ignorant of the warning by the IPCC. They live in countries like China, Russia, and Brazil, run by right-wing demagogues or dictators who are only concerned with power and control, even if it is to the detriment of this planet's biosphere. Many of the powerful and wealthy prefer to ignore the warnings of science, environmentalists, and climate scientists. Their thoughts lie with their immediate pleasures and luxuries, not with future generations, even their own. Then there are the liars (the Donald Trump's of the world) and the deniers ( the Jair Bolsanaro's).

Add the looney tune conspiracy theorists and Q'anon head cases like Alex Jones and Marjorie Taylor Greene and their insane supporters who believe climate change and global warming are "fake news" and you can see, we are fighting an uphill battle.

We in the western world, with ready access to real news, really have no excuse to ignore these dire warnings from the IPPC. Most people have access to a phone, to the internet, or to a mailing system which leads to the point of this post. We collectively must begin lobbying our leaders with phone calls, emails, and letters. We must begin letter-writing campaigns to the editors of our local and national newspapers as well as to radio stations and television stations and networks. The people of planet earth are not going to turn this runaway train around overnight. But, write-in campaigns do work. This one will have to be done on a massive scale.

Let's face it. The holiday is over. This came to my attention a few weeks ago when a small town in British Columbia experienced a high temperature of 49.7 degrees Celsius. For our American friends, that is 121.46 degrees Fahrenheit. The following day, the town was enveloped in a firestorm.

This was the highest temperature ever recorded in Canada and according to the experts, is the shape of things to come. Currently, there are 300 fires burning in BC and another small town has been lost. This, in Canada; the land of snow, ice, and winter.

As mentioned in my sub-heading, the pen is mightier than the sword. The purpose of this post is to encourage all writers to begin writing at least one article, column or post once a week on Medium, Vocal or whatever other platform you write on, on the topic of climate change and global warming.

And, share your posts with friends, family, business acquaintances and post on Twitter and Facebook and any other social media you contribute. Get the word out. Show your concern. Write letters to editors of your local paper and national paper. The time for complacency is over.

Writers of the world, please write on this subject.
