Former Chelsea forward Atsu rescued after Turkey earthquake
Former Premier League footballer Christian Atsu has been successfully rescued from under the rubble of a collapsed building following an earthquake in southern Turkey. The Ghana Football Association confirmed the news and said the 31-year-old is receiving treatment.
Atsu, who played for Chelsea and Newcastle, was reported missing on Monday after a 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck Turkey and Syria.

Israeli response team lands in Turkey
An Israeli response team arrived in Turkey on Tuesday, launching search and rescue operations in the country.
The team consists of almost 150 personnel, who will be aiding in rescue and medical operations as well as delivery of aid, the Israeli defense forces said in a tweet on Monday.
Germany says Russia must pressure Syria into ensuring quake aid arrives
German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock on Tuesday called on Russia to help pressure Syria into allowing humanitarian aid into the country for victims of Monday’s deadly earthquake quickly and without additional obstacles.
"All international actors, including Russia, should exert their pressure on the Syrian regime to ensure humanitarian help for victims can arrive,” said Baerbock during a news conference in Berlin with Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirsojan.
Turkish President Erdogan announces state of emergency in 10 provinces
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has declared a state of emergency in 10 earthquake-hit provinces.
In his address to media, Erdogan said that so far, 3,400 people have lost their lives and more than 8,000 have been rescued.
He further announced:
- Until February 13, all schools will be closed
- All public buildings will be used for the victims (for their shelter)
- 54,000 tents, 1,02,000 beds sent to earthquake-hit regions
- There has been power outrage in the region
- 70 countries and 14 international organisations have come forward for rescue and help
- Not for our country but for the whole world, I can say this is the biggest disaster
- State of emergency will be in place for three months
- We have prepared 10,000 containers to use as shelter. Those have been sent to the disaster area
Germany likely to send more aid for Syrian quake victims
Germany will provide an additional million euros to the Malteser International aid group and is working to make more financial aid available to other humanitarian partners helping quake victims in Syria, Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock has said.
Speaking at a news conference in Berlin with Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirsojan, Baerbock added that Germany is also pushing for humanitarian access to Syria.
Thousands of children may have been killed in earthquakes: Unicef
With the death toll continuing to rise in Turkey and Syria, the United Nations children’s agency is now saying that thousands of children may have been killed as a result of Monday’s earthquake and its aftershocks.
Unicef spokesperson James Elder made the announcement in a briefing to reporters in Geneva, and added that the organisation was not currently able to determine the specific number of children killed.
