This is why we search for extraterrestrial life on planets where liquid water may exist. On our own planet, 71% of the surface is covered by water, mostly in the form of five interconnected oceans. But what if a quarter of the ocean water was replaced with land? The resulting effect on Earth would be dramatic. Due to global warming, ocean levels are already rising, but adjusting the land-to-water ratio would cause sea levels to fall drastically, exposing vast new areas of land. The regions around the North and South poles would become completely dry, and every continent on the planet would expand significantly. The newly exposed areas would be roughly equal in size to the combined surface areas of Asia, Europe, Africa, and North America. As you explored this new land, you would find that the once interconnected oceans would be separated from one another, and the continents would merge into one massive landmass. This would create new opportunities for scientific exploration and advancement.
