Imagine a world where the land and water are split evenly, with 50% of the planet's surface covered by each. How would this affect life on Earth? What new opportunities for exploration would arise, and what does the colour of your urine have to do with it? When it comes to sustaining life on a planet, water is an essential component. This is why we search for extraterrestrial life on planets where liquid water may exist. On our own planet, 71% of the surface is covered by water, mostly in the form of five interconnected oceans. But what if a quarter of the ocean water was replaced with land? The resulting effect on Earth would be dramatic. Due to global warming, ocean levels are already rising, but adjusting the land-to-water ratio would cause sea levels to fall drastically, exposing vast new areas of land. The regions around the North and South poles would become completely dry, and every continent on the planet would expand significantly. The newly exposed areas would be roughly equal in size to the combined surface areas of Asia, Europe, Africa, and North America. As you explored this new land, you would find that the once interconnected oceans would be separated from one another, and the continents would merge into one massive landmass. This would create new opportunities for scientific exploration and advancement.

In ancient times, people did not have access to ships or planes. They migrated across the globe by walking and wandering away from Africa. Roughly 70,000 to 100,000 years ago, we discovered Europe and Asia. Eventually, we were able to cross a land bridge connecting Asia to the Americas, possibly as far back as 20,000 years ago. With the advent of the 50/50 split, you can now cover even more ground on your own two feet and fulfil your dream of a worldwide trip. However, this change in water and land distribution would not be all fun and games. With less water covering the surface, our ocean currents would be disturbed, which would destabilize the climate streams. This would cause even colder temperatures around the north and south poles while making already hot tropical areas even warmer. Climate change would also accelerate because oceans would not be able to absorb as much carbon dioxide from the air. This excess carbon dioxide would blanket the planet and raise temperatures.

If rain levels decrease, dangerous droughts and deserts may appear in many inland areas. Although there are unused land available, extensive stretches of soil may become unsuitable for plants, animals and people, who may have to adapt to being less dependent on water or at least use it more efficiently. Water scarcity may lead to smaller animals evolving and more of them switching to a purely carnivorous diet. Unfortunately, the abundance of life that today's oceans support may struggle to survive. Perhaps the most surprising consequence is that your urine may change forever. Normally, urine is more than 90% water, but with less water in your daily life, it may become much darker and smell like ammonia. Even worse, you could drain every drop of water from the seas, but that is a story for another time.
