YOU CAN LITERALLY EAT THIS ISLAND
Islands are bodies of land surrounded by water. Continents, which are much bigger, are not considered islands. Australia is the smallest continent and is more than three times the size of Greenland, the largest island. There are countless islands in the ocean, lakes, and rivers around the world. They vary greatly in size, climate, and the kinds of organisms that inhabit them. Many islands are quite small and cover only a portion of a hectare (one acre). These tiny islands are often called islets. Many islands in rivers are sometimes called eyots or aits. Other islands are huge and cover an area of about 2166000 square kilometers (836000 square miles). Some islands like the Aleutian Islands in Alaska get cold all year long. Others like Tahiti lie in warm tropical waters. Many Islands are thousands of kilometers from the nearest mainland while other islands are found in closely spaced archipelagoes. For example, Tokyo is located on Honshu while Manhattan is located on Manhattan Island in New York City.
