RIVERS IN INDIA

It is an already known fact that India is the land of many rivers. India has more than 200 rivers, including major rivers and tributaries. All the major rivers in India originate from the Himalayas, Karakoram, Aravalli, Vindhya, Satpura ranges, the Western Ghats in western India, and Chotanagpur plateau in central India. The rivers of the Himalayas and other ranges mainly started by melting snow and glaciers. Therefore, Himalayan rivers continuously flow throughout the year.

The Indus River :

It is the longest river in India, length is about 3180 km. It is also know as Sindhu Nad, The Indus River provides key water resources for Pakistan’s economy. Its estimated annual flow stands at around 243 km3, twice that of the Nile River.

The Brahmaputra River :

The Brahmaputra River has its source in southwest Tibet. The overall length of the Brahmaputra River is approximately 1,800 miles (2,900 km). Which is considered as the longest revers which flows in India. The river is named as Tsangpo-Brahmaputra River.

The Ganga River :

The Ganges, also Ganga, is a river of Asia which flows start with the nations of India ends at Bangladesh. Its the largest river in India.

The Godavari River :

Godavari river is also known as Dakshin Ganga and Gautami. It is one of the longest rivers in India and its the longest river in south india. Total length is about 1465 km. It starts with Trimbak in Nashik District of Maharashtra state and flows east across the Deccan Plateau into the Bay of Bengal in West Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh.

The Sutlej River :

Sutlej is a tributary of the Indus River. It is the longest of the five rivers that flow through Punjab in northern India and Pakistan. The Sutlej River is also known as Satadree. The source of the Sutlej is west of Lake Rakshastal in Tibet. Total length of Sutlej is 1,500 km. Water from Sutlej river allocated to India according to the Indus Waters Treaty of 1960. Under this treaty, while India gained rights to the water of the Sutlej River, Pakistan was allotted rights to the Indus River water along with its western tributaries.

The Krishna River :

The Krishna River is the fourth-biggest river inflows and river basin area in India, after the Ganga, Godavari and Brahmaputra. The river is 1,300 kilometres long. Its also called as Krishnaveni. The river functions for Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Andhra Pradesh.

The Yamuna River :

Yamuna River, also called Jumna, Its one of the major rivers of northern India. It flows across Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh states. It is an especially sacred place to Hindus and is the site of annual festivals and Kumbh Mela, which is held every 12 years and is attended by millions of devotees.

The Narmada River :

The Narmada, also called the Rewa, it is in central India and the fifth longest river. Source of the Narmada is Narmada Kund, located at Amarkantak in Anuppur District, Madhya Pradesh. Narmada is the third longest river that flows entirely within India, after the Godavari, and the Krishna. People from Madhya Pradesh depends fully on Narmada River, they are considering narmada as “Life Line of Madhya Pradesh”.

The Ghaghara River :Ghaghara River also called as Kauriala. Its a big tributary of the Ganges River. Its Flows across the Uttar Pradesh and Bihar states. The major tributaries—the Kuwana, the Rapti and Gandak. Its total Length is 1080 km. The Ghaghara River flows from Tibet to China, Nepal and India.

The Chambal River :

Chambal River is one of the major rivers of northern India. It is the major tributary of the Yamuna River. It flows through Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh . The amazing is fact is Chambal River is considered pollution free river. Its originates from Singar Chouri. The main tributaries of Chambal include the Banas and Mej rivers on the left and the Parbati, Kali Sindh and Shipra rivers on the right.

The Chenab River :Chenab River flows through the Jammu region and in Punjab.The Chenab river water are allocated to Pakistan under the terms of the Indus Waters Treaty. its total length of 1,200 km. It is the largest river of Himachal Pradesh in terms of volume of waters.
