What would happen if you lived in the Cambrian time?

You have journeyed back over 500 million years to the past to witness some of the most perilous oceans and peculiar organisms that have ever existed on Earth. Welcome to the Cambrian Period. How would Earth appear in comparison to its current state? What sustenance could you consume to survive, and what types of creatures would pose a threat? This scenario explores the possibilities of living in the Cambrian Period, having traveled half a billion years into the past. Initially, you would need to orient yourself. Regrettably, the familiar Earth you once knew has vanished, or rather, it has not yet come into being. You would discover yourself on a planet enveloped by shallow seas across most of its surface. In the southern hemisphere, where you are currently situated, the supercontinent Rodinia is just commencing its fragmentation. There are Gondwana, the landmass that will eventually encompass South America, Africa, and Australia; Laurentia, which includes a significant portion of North America along with Siberia; and Baltica, stretching across what will later become Scandinavia, Eastern Europe, and parts of Russia. However, you would struggle to identify any landmarks. There would be no recognizable mountain peaks or verdant vegetation. The landscape would predominantly be desolate, save for mosses and algae scattered throughout,As you approach the Ocean's Edge, you will witness a burst of Life flourishing on the early Earth. However, caution is advised as some of these life forms could be dangerous. Just beneath the ocean's surface, you will catch a glimpse of a period when life on Earth was rapidly diversifying. During this time, there were some extraordinary creatures, but sadly, they have become extinct. I am personally concerned about preventing such extinctions from happening again with the current creatures we have. Fortunately, I have a solution from our partners at Planet Wild who are working tirelessly to revive endangered species. You can even participate in their missions. Stay tuned until the end of the video for more details and a special gift. You have now arrived in the midst of the Cambrian explosion, a brief period between 530 and 540 million years ago when new organisms thrived on the seafloor. You will encounter strange-looking critters that may seem intimidating at first, but rest assured, they pose no harm. These are trilobites, ancient creatures that roamed from tropical waters to icy regions with their spiny limbs and wide mouths. You can observe them scavenging for worms and algae to consume. At this point, you may notice that breathing is more challenging on Earth due to lower oxygen levels in the atmosphere compared to modern times. Even at sea level, it would feel like you are at a higher altitude, especially since the ozone layer has not fully developed yet You would also need to make sure to protect yourself from the significantly stronger UV rays that are constantly bombarding you from the Sun. It is advisable to have brought sunscreen with you, as it will be difficult to find any here for a considerable amount of time. By now, you would likely be feeling hungry, especially after observing the trilobites devouring their delicious snacks. You may start to wonder what kind of food options are available to you during the Cambrian Period. Your best bet would be to stay close to the sea, but exercise caution and avoid hastily consuming worms, as some of the food sources you encounter could be highly toxic. You would be consuming unfamiliar bacteria that your body is not accustomed to, so be prepared for an upset stomach or potentially worse. While you are out hunting for dinner, be vigilant for larger predators lurking in the shadows. However, there is no need to worry too much, as many of the organisms you encounter, such as the anomalocaridids, are harmless. These shrimp-like animals could grow up to 38 cm, but they pose no significant threat to you. In fact, you would be the apex predator, occupying the top of the prehistoric food chain. As your time spent in the Cambrian Period extends from days to weeks, you will continue to face challenges in adapting to the environment. The low levels of oxygen will make even the simplest physical tasks more difficult, and the absence of fruits, vegetables, and your usual sources of protein may lead to malnutrition. Despite the numerous challenges, you would be witnessing one of the most crucial eras in the development of life on Earth. The creatures in the sea during this period will go on to evolve and serve as the foundation for much of the life we know today. When your time machine eventually becomes operational again, you would likely be relieved to leave this ancient period behind. However, perhaps you are not quite ready to return home just yet. It is intriguing to ponder what the Devonian Period was like, but that is a story for another day.
