Growing up on Earth

Human consumerism and Earth's natural resources

Simple and Profound Beauty

The year is 2050. Your daughter is 37 years of age and just became a mom herself. Earth has been depleted of almost all its fossil fuels. Oil, a fossil fuel used to power our vehicles, machinery, ships, industries, airplanes and all else that allowed a comfortable life during the past century has been completely or nearly all used up. The mom and the baby struggle to survive. Days are cold. Nights are long. There is little hope in sight.

Your granddaughter is now 8 years of age. We consumed all the available oil fossil fuel by 2051. Life is grim. People have been using what they can to survive. For 8 years now, coal and natural gas have been the only fuel resources left in earth's soil. After continued usage for the past 8 years, natural gas is too depleted. The year is 2059. People are surviving only on coal. We started using coal as the main source to power electricity during the late 1800's beginning of the 1900's. Once again it has become the main and only fossil fuel available. But, it too will be used by 2088.

The year is 2021. The above is not far away in time. Not only not far away, it is not distant from our realities and families. It can and will happen to all of us, to our children and grandchildren if we dont stop irrational, exaggerated and unnecessary consumption of food, personal items, recreation and reduce global economic greediness.

How many pairs of pants can one wear at the same time? How many shoes can one put in one foot at the same time? How many shirts can one fit in the body at the same time? How much jewelry and perfume can one wear? How much food can we produce for a certain population?

How much make up and how many lip sticks can one person use at the same time? How many arcades can there be built when some dont even have a meal to eat? How much space does one need to feel at home? How much is enough? Let's look in ourselves and not only around because each of us is contributing to the depletion of earth's natural resources. We can all do something if we become aware of what we consume.

Individual consumption does not look like much, after all, we are all but one. Make no mistake, this is a domino effect that is subtle, but with very deep and irreparable consequences.

Never underestimate the power of One.

Conscious consumption means to live comfortably, but reasonably, and with the understanding that we all need to live and live well. It is irrational to boxed up in a closet what 20 other people can wear. This is truly a mistake of capitalistic humanity.

How can we ever find joy in the quantity? The joy is in the quality of our lives not in the quantity of what we own. Our acquiring of things needs to be sensible and be exercised by need not by impulse. We are buying and over consuming because there is an inner lack of joy and wellbeing. Anxiety and stress can turn us into compulsive human beings.

Earth has soil, air, water, a sky, and all of these elements that support our lives are in some form or another abused by extreme usage. Fossil fuels are only the soil story. But, there is a lot more.

It is our individual responsibility that there is something Left.

I was born on planet Earth, luckily for me, Earth took its location after Venus and before Mars. And, this matters a lot as its position has allowed Earth to harbor the perfect conditions for the evolution of my life as a being.

As Sunlight travels, it takes about 8 minutes for it to reach us here, which illuminates and warms at the right temperature to foster growth and life. The combination of land with the 76% percentage of bodies of water allows for a balanced water cycle that maintains healthy ecosystems and biodiversity. The land developed in forests, desserts and plain lands, which contribute in unique and balancing ways to the health of the planet and thus our health.

All that I have seen so far, Earth’s mountains, rivers, lakes, oceans, waterfalls, caves, untouched landscapes, have been made possible only by Earth’s intelligence and by nature’s way of preserving life. No rainbows, shooting stars or eclipses have been the creation of any man. And, no man dead or alive will ever be as intelligent, gentle and life nurturing as Earth and nature are.

I am still growing up on Earth. I hope Earth remains in control of its own cycles and development as my Life depends on it as well as the lives of millions of human beings that are yet to materialize in it. Earth has several inner mechanisms to balance itself out but not without creating some natural chaos and it will auto regulate when it needs to, even if we are all erased as dinosaurs once were.

Growing up of Earth has made me appreciate it and be full of love for it. Above all, I know not to undermine it as I am nothing but a piece of Earth.

This ever rotating, gentle and unique blue ball is our true Home. Have you ever been out of Earth?
