Drinking coffee reduces the risk of death from sitting too much

Modern life makes us sit in office chairs longer to do tasks that use the mind, but can cause serious health effects in the long run.

Drinking coffee can bring unexpected benefits

A cup of coffee can be the solution to compensate for that unscientific lifestyle.

A study based on more than 10,000 Americans found that daily coffee drinkers may be protected from the negative effects of sitting for six or more hours a day.

Compared with people who did not drink coffee and sat that much , sedentary coffee drinkers were 1.58 times less likely to die from all causes within the following 13 years.

Researchers at Soochow University (China) say their study is the first to evaluate the health benefits of coffee that may counteract the increased risk of death associated with prolonged sitting.

The researchers found that drinking coffee essentially eliminated the association between sedentary lifestyle , cardiovascular death, and all-cause mortality.

This is something that even regular exercise cannot completely protect you from, as it can lead to long-term health problems (like type 2 diabetes, heart disease, or stroke).

Most study participants had a sedentary lifestyle and drank coffee every day. They have benefited from a reduced risk of death from cardiovascular disease thanks to this simple habit.

In particular, for people who drink a lot of coffee, specifically more than 2.5 cups per day, the risk of death from all causes may be lower than those who do not drink coffee, but sit up to 6 hours less.

"Coffee is a complex compound, so more research is needed to discover its magic ," the Soochow researchers concluded.

Science has not yet fully discovered the health benefits of coffee

Previously, many studies also showed that drinking coffee, or providing caffeine in the blood, can reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes or cardiovascular diseases.

Even decaffeinated coffee is healthy because it's rich in antioxidants, which can help boost metabolism and reduce inflammation.

Certain compounds in coffee may also protect the brain from degenerative diseases, such as Parkinson's disease.

In early 2024, a study found that people with colorectal cancer who drank at least 5 cups of coffee a day had a 32% lower risk of the disease recurring than those who drank less than 2 cups a day.

The same study also found that drinking 3–5 cups of coffee per day was associated with the greatest reduction in all-cause mortality.

However, this benefit will decrease if you drink more than 5 cups.
