The Secret Vape and the Man Who Thinks I'm Free
You're carrying two burdens right now: the addiction and the shame of hiding it. And the shame is heavier.
I want to start by saying something I suspect you need to hear: you are not a bad person for relapsing. Relapse is not a moral failure; it is part of the recovery process. You have not "failed" him or yourself. You are struggling, and you have been struggling for a very long time, and the past few weeks have been objectively overwhelming.
Let's look at what you've been carrying:
The loss of a family dog
Watching your mother fall apart from grief
The death of a grandparent
The stress of an upcoming trip
Debt that keeps piling up
That is a heavy load. Any one of those things can break a person's resolve. All of them together? That would test anyone.
Why You Haven't Told Him
You said: "I'm scared to tell him. I'm not afraid he'll be mad. I know he'll be upset and I can't bear to see it right now."
That is the core of it, isn't it? It's not anger you're afraid of. It's the disappointment. The sadness. The quiet "I thought you were doing better" in his eyes. You are trying to protect him from that feeling, but you are also protecting yourself from it. And that's understandable.
What I Want You to Hear
He helped you quit before. That means he knows addiction. He knows it isn't linear. He knows that quitting is rarely a straight line from start to finish. It is a winding path with steps forward and steps back.
You are not a failure because you stepped back.
You are human.
What If You Told Him?
I'm not going to tell you that you must tell him immediately. I don't know your relationship. But I will say this:
The secrecy is probably weighing on you more than you realize. The hidden vape. The moments at work. The fear of being caught. It is another layer of stress on top of all the other stresses.
If you tell him, you might be surprised. Not because he won't be upset; he likely will be. But because he might also understand. He might say "I'm glad you told me." He might say "Let me help you again." He might say "I'm proud of you for being honest."
And if he doesn't say those things, if he reacts with anger or disappointment that is also his right. But at least you won't be carrying the secret anymore.
What If You Don't?
I want to gently point out that you have already made a choice. You said: "This will be my last one. I refuse to step foot in a vape shop."
That means you want to be done with this. You want to be free of the secret, the shame, and the addiction. You want to go back to the person he thinks you are or perhaps, the person you want to become.
That is a brave decision.
A Practical Thought
You don't have to tell him dramatically. You could say:
"I need to tell you something really hard for me to say. I relapsed. I've been vaping at work for a little while. I was so ashamed and I was scared to disappoint you. I'm telling you now because I want to be honest and I want to move forward."
You don't need to apologize for the relapse. You can apologize for hiding it, if you feel that's appropriate. But mostly, you can just say the truth and let him respond however he responds.
A Final Reminder
You are not your addiction. You are a person who is struggling, who has been through a tremendous amount of stress, and who is still fighting. The fact that you are posting this that you are trying to figure out how to be honest tells me that you want to do the right thing.
That's not failure. That's courage.
Take a breath. Decide what you need. And if you decide to tell him, know that you are not alone. Many of us have hidden things from the people we love and eventually found the strength to tell the truth.
You will get there.
