On New Year's Eve 2023, my cousin's wife, barely a month into her marriage, grinded against another man at a party while I stood frozen in the doorway. She saw me. She knew I saw her. And then she tried to act like nothing had happened.

That moment set off a chain of events that would unravel my relationship with my cousin, cost me my trust in the people around me, and leave me carrying a secret I never asked for.

The Night It Happened

My cousin Henry was out of state for work. His wife Kelly was partying with us. I was newly dating someone at the time, and she turned out to be emotionally abusive, but that's another story. It paints a picture of the kind of people my cousin surrounds himself with: clingy, co-dependent, and frankly awful.

We started taking shots at my ex's apartment, then headed to two parties. At the first, I dodged a pyramid scheme pitch. At the second, after midnight, I was already feeling uneasy. My ex had been flirting with a tall guy named Justin, who invited us to his place. I was fine, pacing myself as always.

What I Saw

I walked into the living room to get some water after doing a line of coke that burned my throat. And then I froze.

There was Kelly and Justin absolutely grinding it up like a middle school dance. Hands all over each other. Then Kelly saw me and instantly split away from Justin, trying to act like she wasn't doing anything. But I saw it. She knows I saw it.

Later, at 4 am, we were finally leaving. Kelly stopped dead, staring at her phone, then marched back into the party without a word. We followed her. She was flirting with Justin again, completely ignoring us.

I shouted "KELLY!" loud enough to shut the whole room up. I said, "We are leaving now. Time to go. Okay?" She gawped at me like a deer in headlights. Then Harmony the pyramid scheme girl, came to her rescue, saying Kelly was staying with her. Kelly nodded. They both smirked at me like I was the villain.

So I walked out feeling utterly betrayed by someone I trusted and who had just become part of my family.

The Blackmail

The next morning, I told my ex I had an obligation to tell Henry. She lost her shit.

She pounced on me, blackmailing me, gaslighting me, saying I would destroy their marriage and it would be all my fault. She said, "you don't know what you saw, it could have been innocent." She even lied and said they have an open relationship. I said, "Then it shouldn't be a problem for me to tell him." She panicked and threatened to end our relationship unless I swore never to tell Henry.

Unfortunately for me, I really liked her. So I agreed.

But I was bluffing. I fully intended to tell him. When the time was right.

The Fallout

I never found the right time. After Henry got back, he seemed immediately suspicious and resentful of me for dating my ex. He started behaving in ways I didn't recognize. There were D&D games I showed up late to. One time I double-booked and cancelled on him. He screamed at me over the phone and said, "I'm not your friend anymore. We're not friends."

He gave me the silent treatment for two months. I was devastated. I tried to reconnect after breaking up with my ex, but it didn't take. He was still mad about D&D and still friends with my abusive ex. Their whole friend group rallied to her side. They villainized me, which didn't bother me coming from them. But coming from him, it was a knife in the back.

The Aftermath

Two years later, I still carry the secret. Kelly and Henry are still married—at least on paper. I avoid them at family events. Last Thanksgiving, Kelly got drunk and approached me.

She said, "I love you. You know I love you, right?" and "We're still friends, right?" I said "That was one time, three years ago. We're not friends." She asked if she could call me. I said "I gotta go," and ran away to have a panic attack in private.

Part of me wants to ruin their marriage with this cheating story. But I would feel like an actual villain for doing it. They just make me so fucking mad. I hate them both. Her for burdening me with this, and him for stabbing me in the back, and both of them for discarding me like I was nothing.

I honestly don't know if he even deserves to hear it from me. Maybe he deserves to keep getting cheated on by her. But the question keeps me up at night: if I tell him now, after all this time, would it be honesty or revenge?

And I'm not sure which answer scares me more.
