Recordings I Never Deleted
About 16 years ago, my partner and I made adult videos together. She thinks they're gone. I know they're not.
About 16 years ago, my partner and I made some adult videos together and posted them online. Eventually, we moved to another platform where she did cam shows, and we sold additional videos. It was a period of our lives that felt adventurous at the time, exploring, experimenting, and pushing boundaries. We were young, and it was exciting.
At some point, I secretly kept copies of a few of the recordings. She believes we deleted everything years ago. I never corrected her.
That's the part I feel guilty about.
The Secret
These recordings became something I privately returned to over the years. I told myself it wasn't really hurting anyone because they were videos we had made together and because I wasn't sharing them with anybody else. They were ours. They were memories, private moments that I could revisit whenever I wanted.
But I knew she believed they were gone. I knew she had moved on from that period of our lives and didn't want to look back. And I deliberately chose to keep them anyway.
I justified it to myself in a hundred different ways. I told myself it was harmless. I told myself it was just nostalgia. I told myself that because I wasn't showing them to anyone, it wasn't a betrayal.
But it was. It is.
The Moment of Truth
A few years ago, we were drinking, and I jokingly mentioned that I might still have some of them. She actually seemed amused by the idea. For a moment, I thought maybe I could come clean. Maybe she wouldn't be as upset as I feared. Maybe she'd laugh it off and say, "Oh, you're such a hoarder."
But then the subject came up while we were sober. She made it clear that she regrets that period of our lives. She doesn't want anything to do with those videos. She wants them gone, forgotten, erased.
And I'm still holding onto them.
The Rationalization
So now I'm stuck with something I've knowingly hidden from the person I love. I've convinced myself that because I'm not showing them to anyone else, keeping this secret isn't a big deal. I've told myself that our relationship is good, our sex life is good, and this doesn't affect any of that.
But the truth is, I know that's a convenient excuse.
She thinks they're gone. I know they're not. And I've deliberately kept that from her for years. Every time I've revisited those recordings, I've been lying to her by omission. Every time I've kept quiet, I've chosen my own comfort over her autonomy.
I feel guilty because I know she would feel violated if she knew. She would feel like I'd taken something from her, a choice, a piece of her history, control over her own image. Even though we made those videos together, she made it clear that she wanted them to disappear. I pretended to agree, and then I secretly preserved them.
I'm not sharing them. I'm not posting them anywhere. But I'm still holding onto them, and that feels like a betrayal.
I'm afraid to tell her. I'm afraid of her reaction. I'm afraid she'll see it as the ultimate betrayal. I'm afraid she'll wonder what else I've kept from her. I'm afraid she'll lose trust in me.
But I'm also afraid of losing the videos. They're a part of our history, a part of me that I'm not ready to let go of. And that makes me feel even more guilty because I'm choosing a piece of digital history over her peace of mind.
What I Should Do
I know what I should do. I should delete them. I should tell her the truth and apologize. I should accept whatever consequences come and work to rebuild trust.
But I haven't done that yet. I'm still holding on.
I know that keeping this secret is wrong. I know that I've been hiding something from the person I love because I'm scared of losing it and scared of losing her. I know that the longer I hold onto it, the harder it will be to let go.
I want to be the kind of person who is honest, even when it's hard. I want to be the kind of partner who respects her boundaries, even when it means letting go of something I want to keep.
I don't know if I'll delete them today. I don't know if I'll tell her this week. But I know that I can't keep pretending that this secret doesn't exist.
It does. And it's mine to fix.
